Forty-four percent of adults in the United States are reading and writing at a fourth-grade level. Nearly twenty percent of high school seniors graduated last year without knowing how to read. Regardless of politics, I think we can agree that illiteracy is an enemy to liberty and an obstacle to bridging the gap between us and our fellow man. The White House has released its proposed budget for 2019 and it includes sizable reductions in federal funding for libraries and museums. Danielle A.
