A new report suggests Ennis has had the worst air quality in the country so far this year. Data from the Environmental Protection Agency shows the daily limit for particulate matter in the air has been breached on seven occasions in the county town this year which is more than anywhere else nationwide. Particulate matter is made up of solid particles and liquid droplets which are harmful to human health and largely created by the burning of solid fuel. Mayor of Ennis, Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard, is calling for a clampdown on the selling of smoky coal.
