The film stars Hanna Schygulla as the titular character. Maria marries Hermann Braun during the final days of the Second World War. He ships off to the Eastern Front after their quick wedding. He goes missing and is presumed dead. Maria puts her beauty and tenacious ambition to good use in order to find prosperity during Germany's "economic miracle". The film shows ten years of her life followi
