During the cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union, each side developed and demanded more military might. The best deterrent for an all out war, they thought, was a strategic nuclear armament, so large, that each side would ultimately destroy each other, and the whole earth, some 300,000 times over if anyone made the first move.
