Last week we saw how Jesus confronted the religious leaders of His day with the fact that, in order to keep their own rules, they had set aside the commandments of God Himself. Today we ask the question: Can the same thing be said of us? Are we prone to make more rules than the Bible contains and then to measure ourselves and others by those man-made rules? The painful answer is "yes." We are by nature given to self-promotion and self-righteousness, and making our own rules allows us to succeed in both areas! But this isn’t best for us or for Grace, and it certainly is not best for the mission of Christ.So let’s admit our tendencies and together bring ourselves to the mirror of Scripture to see, understand, and then repudiate the dangers of legalism in our lives today.
