Rather than cheering the prophets on, as we do Elijah and Elisha, when we encounter figures like Amos, Hosea, and Micah, we soon come to the uncomfortable realization that the dramatic language and performative deeds of the prophets we are reading are more aimed at us rather than on our behalf.
