Nobel Peace Talks - From smear campaigns to extreme surveillance
29/04/2024 Duración: 38minLearn how new technology is used to double down on demonstrants and activists in Iran. Activists used social media effectively in the Iranian protests after Mahsa Jina Amini’s death in September 2022. But the regime is also using new technology to double down on activists and on ordinary women and girls: Face recognition is used to surveil and identify girls and women who are walking on the streets without a headscarf. More than a million women have received SMS warnings threatening that their cars will be confiscated because they have been seen driving unveiled. And a number of women’s activists have had their social media accounts removed and have been targeted with organized smear campaigns. Iran’s government is but one amongst a growing global list of rights abusing governments using technology to suppress their population. In this event, co-organized with Amnesty International Norway, we look at how technology is used to target women and human rights defenders and discuss what can be done to protect t

The Israel-Palestine conflict: United through grief, together for peace
28/02/2024 Duración: 01h05minThe ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has resulted in catastrophic suffering for the civilian population. In a devastating situation where hope seems distant, it is important to remember that war is not the solution. Palestinian Bassam Aramin and Israeli Rami Elhanan have both lost a daughter in the conflict. But instead of succumbing to bitterness and hatred, they have joined forces to work for peace. How did they manage to overcome hatred? Bassam Aramin is a former Palestinian freedom fighter born and raised in Hebron. He was imprisoned at the age of 17 and spent seven years in an Israeli prison. Rami Elhanan is an Israeli Jew from Jerusalem and was a combatant soldier in the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Bassam lost his 10-year-old daughter Abir in 1997, she was killed by Israeli border police right in front of her school. Rami lost his 14-year-old daughter Smadar in 1983 in a Hamas-led suicide attack in Jerusalem. Despite the circumstances, the two have become close friends, and have dedicated the
