Good Thursday morning from WGBH Radio. Joe Mathieu and our Morning Edition crew are warming up the broadcast equipment and getting the news ready for today, but first Early Edition helps Boston wake up with “the best 10”. A ton of Covid-19 related news this morning, including a mandatory mask mandate in Alabama, and the opposite of that down in Georgia. A major twitter hack went down yesterday afternoon that involved a lot of bigger ‘blue check mark’ accounts. And there won’t be any swan boat rides this season down at the public garden. And happy birthday to our own Karen Marshall, who kept it quiet right until the end. Thanks as always for waking up with WGBH’s Morning Edition.

Good Wednesday morning from WGBH Radio and our entire Morning Edition team. We’re “building the plane in flight” once again this morning, as introducing new equipment to a broadcast chain can often come with some unique challenges. Joe Mathieu reminds us all that today is indeed Tax Day, as the three month extension granted to us by the Federal Government and the State of Massachusetts comes to an end today at 11:59PM. And President Trump broke the rules again yesterday and used a Rose Garden press conference as a 2020 campaign event. Stay diligent and stay safe out there, and thanks again for waking up with WGBH.

Summer sleep schedules are always an adventure, especially for the crew here on Morning Edition… when your head hits the pillow each “night”, you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get. As far as we can tell, no member of Early Edition has ever been a nude beach participant (and thank goodness for that). We’re still missing our “show Mom” Karen, and Joe can’t remember if she’s been gone for two weeks, or two months. Are people finally running out of fireworks? We all collectively hope so. Turns out our young writing team of Brendan and Shelby are much more responsible than other representatives of their age group. And the weather is about to turn downright soupy around these parts. The rush to re-open in many other states is not going as planned, as the city of Miami is now shutting restaurants, gyms and other services back down. We can only wonder if the numbers will start to creep back up in the Bay State as residents of other states head here to vacation. Good Monday morning from WGBH Radio, Joe Mathieu, and our entire Morning Edition team. We all had great weekends despite being kept up to all hours this weekend, courtesy of the record amount of fireworks we all witnessed. None of course were of the municipal variety, as organized displays were cancelled around the area, but that didn’t stop residents from taking things into their own hands. Plus “the kids” take over the show briefly as Joe battles connection issues, and even the vacationing Marshalls make an appearance. Thanks for waking up with WGBH Radio, have a great week!

Joe is back to broadcasting from home for the holiday weekend and raring to go for today’s Early Edition. Restrictions are easing across the region, and on the surface that should make us all happy, but anecdotal evidence from our Early Edition team shows that people may already be pushing the envelope, as crowds are growing and mask use appears to be waning. Good Thursday morning from Joe Mathieu and the WGBH Morning Edition team. Fog is the word this morning as it envelops the area, your visibility may vary. A grim milestone for Covid-19 infections in the US, as new daily positive tests in the country broke the 50,000 mark for the first time, a new single day record. Meanwhile President Trump was content to once again repeat his claim that “one day it will disappear”, while comparing himself to the lone ranger. The covid-19 numbers for Massachusetts showed some very promising signs yesterday, but they need to be kept in context with the surge going on in many other parts of the country: this is no time to relax our practices… keep it up Massachusetts! Meanwhile in Miami, the mayor has finally decided that banning lap dances at strip clubs is a good idea. The Patriots’ Julian Edelman seems to have a new crush, and that’s made his old flame Tom Brady a little jealous. The City of Boston is poised to take on the epidemic of fireworks in the area by forming a task force to look into it. Rhode Island is set to enter phase 3 of its re-opening today. And we’re joined by a special guest for today’s Early Edition… WGBH radio’s own Michelle Sweet is moving on to the next step in her life, and as a big fan of Early Edition we welcomed her in to our Zoom to say thanks. We recap the news from the weekend including covid-19 numbers that continue to rise in Florida and Texas among other places. Meanwhile the President has stepped in it again after retweeting a video of some of his supporters saying some highly questionable things in a Florida retirement community. And the Trump administration is in full damage control mode after the NY Times story about Russian bounties on American soldiers in Afghanistan.
