True faith in God is about the courage to be open to reality and hard truths. But when used inappropriately, it can actually help us avoid reality, including the reality of God. Many people have accepted a view of Christianity that included claims never found in the scriptures. And then when terrible times or difficult questions arise such people walk away from Jesus because their faith was built upon a foundation of sand. Today we look at 5 counterfeits to true faith. Today's message is about the relationship between Science and the life of faith. When used properly, Science is one of our best tools for encountering reality, but when used inappropriately, it can actually help us avoid reality, including the reality of God. A lot of us like the sound of "choosing reality over appearances." But when it involves taking a hard look at the worst parts of ourselves and comparing that to "together" persona we present to others, we tend to avoid this crucial hard work! Today we look at Carl Jung's idea of the shadow and how we hide our own worst flaws from ourselves by projecting them on to others. This idea echoes the deep teaching of the scriptures. If I am going to be a Christian, I need to be brutally honest about my own sin. Today we look at the relationship between Psychology and Faith, and explore the ways we can distort our thinking when we use Psychology the wrong way. Whether we are aware of it or not, all of us are operating under some philosophy of life - we have theories about how life actually works, what is worthwhile and what is not. Philosophy and Logic can be a great way to figure out what is true and a great way to access reality. But we can also use Philosophy the wrong way - to avoid reality and to shield ourselves from the presence of God. While having enjoyable pastimes is a great thing, using diversions to avoid facing reality can keep us from ever growing as a person or a disciple. What does our real schedule look like as opposed to the one we think we have ? How do we really spend our time ? Why cant we stand to be alone with our own thoughts ? This sermon explores the deep roots of our diversions and gives us tools to discern when our diversions are God honoring and when they are not. It is an attempt to explain why we are so divided, why the United States is worth saving , and what ordinary people like you and me can change in ourselves to reduce the polarization in our country. I tried to write in a way that would make sense to both progressives and conservatives which probably means I probably just annoyed everybody! One of my favorite books of all time is a short novel by G.K. Chesterton entitled "Man Alive." It is silly, boisterous, beautiful, irreverent - with a message of profound hope and wisdom lying just just beneath the surface. However, because it was written in 1914 by a Britainer to the people of his time, it can be hard to understand and even offensive to modern ears. Although I feel ridiculous even attempting to modify this classic, I also feel that the possibility of providing access to a new audience is well worth my presumption. So this is his original text modified only slightly and very gently. For example, I rephrase perhaps 10 words in a 25000 word chapter. In the written version I simplify by including copious footnotes on people, places and words not familiar to some modern readers.
