4th Sun. of Advent | Mary's 'Yes' & the Obedience of Faith | December 20, 2020 | Fr. Brian Larkin
23/12/2020 Duración: 17minResources referenced in today's homily: Pope Benedict XVI: "If you had to pick a moment that Christianity began, it would be this one." [he refers to Mary's 'yes.'] The Princess Bride: "Sometimes words can mean something more than just words, such as when Wesley says, 'As you wish.' He wasn't just saying, 'As you wish,' he was saying, 'I love you.'" "Mary teaches us that her 'yes' to God is everything it means to be a Christian." "But, you can say yes on a shallow level, or you can say yes from the depths of your heart. In my better moments, my 'yes' is more complete." "Christianity is about a response." "The degree to which you love is dependent upon the purity of your heart." "'Here I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent!" (2 Samuel 7:2) "Moreover, the LORD also declares to you that the LORD will make a house for you: when your days have been completed and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, sprung from your loins, and I will est

3rd Sunday of Advent | Joy Is a Byproduct | 12.13.2020 | Fr. Brian Larkin
14/12/2020 Duración: 17min3rd Sunday —Gaudete Sunday—Perpetual Happiness vs. True Joy, With All its Sorrow Aldous Huxley—A Brave New World "Our Ford himself did a great deal, to shift the emphasis from truth and beauty to comfort and happiness." Do you want truth and beauty? Or, do you want comfort and happiness? Mary has joy and sorrow because she loves. "My spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Josef Pieper once said, "Joy by its nature is something secondary, and subsidiary. If we look closely into the matter, it becomes apparent that Man does not want to plunge absolutely and unconditionally into the psychological state of rejoicing, but that he wants to have a reason for rejoicing." Joy is a byproduct." He meant that humans want to be more than just "happy." We want to be happy because life is true and beautiful and good. God does want us to rejoice, but for the right things. Check out Father Brian's latest podcast episode on Gregorian Rant! He talks about how people just want to "feel better." We are not made to be "comfortabl

RCIA Class #14 | Official Catholic Teaching, Cult of Personality, & Faith | Fr. Brian Larkin
10/12/2020 Duración: 01h11minRCIA Class #14 | Official Catholic Teaching, Cult of Personality, & Faith | Fr. Brian Larkin Father Brian recommends the 1st edition of the RSV Bible. Scripture scholars will tell you this is the best translation in English. God is truth. "Can you see who He really is? Can you see His glory?" We cannot measure the Divine; the Divine measures us. Faith is letting go of yourself and opening up to God, because when you love someone, you have to learn to surrender. Another resource: Isaiah 6 Jesus heals the deaf and blind men. All the while, everyone is asking Him for a sign that He is who He says He is.

1st Sunday of Advent | New Creation & Reading Someone Else's Mail | 11.29.2020 | Fr. Brian Larkin
29/11/2020 Duración: 21min1st Sunday of Advent 11/29/2020 New Creation & Reading Someone Else's Mail 2 Corinthians 5:17 A New Creation "Behold, the new has come..." J.R.R. Tolkien—the way that most modern scholars read the scripture is like taking a single stone out of a tower instead of examining the tower in its wholeness, and complete form. We will dominantly be reading from the Gospel of Mark in the coming year. When we read the NT, it's like reading someone else's mail. Part of the mystery of Jesus is that he's enthroned in the 4 Gospels. Mark's symbol is the lion because he is riding The person's mail you are reading is in the mid 60s, AD. In 64 AD, Nero set the city of Rome on fire. The image that derived from that is Nero playing the fiddle as it burned. Afterwards, he chose the Catholics a scapegoat. Thus began one of the largest Christian persecutions of Christ. Peter and Paul were martyred during this time. The Gospel of Mark is written for a church who is suffering. Once you know that God loves you from the Book of

33rd. Sun. of Ord. Time | The Christian Mission | 11.15.2020 | Fr. Brian Larkin
15/11/2020 Duración: 22minThe Christian Mission Homily @ 30:26 There is an overarching mention of fear in today's readings, however, we should note the varying definitions of "fear," before we settle on that theme. "Blessed are those who fear the Lord." This is filial fear—based in love of a father. Out of fear, the servant buries the talent (year's wage) = servile fear. This has nothing to do with love, and everything to do with punishment. St. Thomas Aquinas describes a filial fear is compared to familial love, that can only come from love of a father. Servile fear is fear that comes from serving a master. Servile fear-has nothing to do with love, but everything to do with self hatred, and fear of punishment; it mis-caricatures who God is. Servile fear is not from God. Don't listen to things that instill servile fear in you; we are called to filial love. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/a.... ---------- Matthew 25: The Parable of the Talents "Gospel"—Greek for "good news!"

32nd Sun. of OT | Virtue of Endurance | 11.8.2020 | Fr. Brian Larkin
08/11/2020 Duración: 28minVirtue of Endurance Homily at 26:00 All are weary of hardship, and politics, and the pandemic, and the list goes on. But, the Scriptures are calling us to live a life with the virtue of endurance. For your first marathon, the key is endurance: Resources mentioned in today's homily: Matthew 25: 1–13: Compare to Matthew 26 when Jesus is in Gethsemane: 2 Timothy 4:7–8 Paul is about to be martyred...he's approaching his "mile 22"...or maybe "mile 25": 7 * I have competed well; I have finished the race;f I have kept the faith. 8 * From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. In the moments when you're barely hanging on, you don't have to do it alone. Jesus never promised it would be easy to follow him. But, He promised He would be with us through it all. But the virtue of endurance is key, and it is mentioned all throughout the Old and New Testament: Matthew 7:13–14 13 * “Ent
