In a battle between the best teams in each conference, the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Colorado Avalanche, 2-0, at PNC Arena. Antti Raanta stopped 36 shots in the win as the Canes have taken their last 3 decisions. Ethan Bear's 3rd goal of the season deflected past Colorado's Darcy Kuemper late in the 3rd period to give the Hurricanes the lead. Martin Necas hadn't scored a goal in nearly two months. But, his whirling shot past a sprawling Philipp Grubauer put the Hurricanes in front 3-2 and they went on to beat the Seattle Kraken at PNC Arena. Nino Niederreiter and Teuvo Teravainen scored power play goals in the 2nd period for the Canes. For Nino, it was his 17th of the year, while Teravainen, playing in his 500th NHL game, it was his 16th of the season, Antti Raanta made 28 saves earning his second win in as many starts. Coming off the 4-0 snoozer in Washington the Hurricanes needed a quick start against the Penguins. Well, that isn't what they got. But, from the second period on, Jordan Staal and company went to work. The captain scored twice and then turned it over to Andrei Svechnikov and the Canes power play in overtime. Vincent Trocheck scored his 11th goal of the season to stake the Canes to an early 1-0 lead. Then, with just under 4 minutes left, Andrei Svechnikov's 16th broke a 1-1 tie as Carolina picked up a 2-1 win. The Hurricanes have now won 4 in a row and lead the Metropolitan Division with a 31-9-2 record and 64 points. Antti Raanta helped the Hurricanes steal two points from the Devils. Half of his 24 saves came in the 2nd period, including 3 absolute gems, as the Hurricanes held on for a 2-1 win. Raanta hadn't started a game since New Year's Day in Columbus but you'd never know it based on his performance. Jordan Martinook has played just twice since early December but opened the scoring in the 1st period. Andrei Svechnikov added his 15th of the season to make it 2-0. The Hurricanes weren't bad, but after the first they probably weren't the better team. But, they ARE the better team and Nino Niederreiter got them even with a hard-working goal late in the 3rd period. Then Andrei Svechnikov and Freddie Andersen got them across the finish line in the shootout for a 3-2 win over the Senators. Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov are going to be cornerstones of the Carolina Hurricanes for a long time. Tuesday night, they combined to spoil the Vegas Golden Knights' visit to Raleigh with the overtime tally in a 4-3 win. Aho's 18th and 19th goals of the season give him 44 points in 36 games. Andrei, who at one point went through a 12-game stretch with just 3 points, now has a 5-game streak in which he's had 2 points in each game. He has 15 points (5g, 10a) in his last 10 games, and has 36 points in 36 games this year. Tony DeAngelo has at least 1 point in 5 straight games, posting a goal and 8 assists in that span. The Carolina Hurricanes gave rookie goaltender Jack LaFontaine the start in New Jersey. They got off to a fast start with a pair of goals in the first six minutes. Then, most of the skaters took the rest of the night off as LaFontaine was left to fend for himself against a young, speedy, Devils squad with nothing to lose.
