  • Let's Stop Talking About BIM

    12/06/2019 Duración: 35min

In this episode of Beyond 3D we talk about the misconceptions of BIM and how that has hindered adoption. Mike Shilton is a qualified landscaper architect and also the Product Director at Keysoft Solutions. We have a frank discussion about how we should think and talk about implementing 3D modeling, digital construction and all the different aspects of BIM to make it less intimidating. “We tend to talk more about digital construction now, as the term and exchanging data between different parties requires you to do that through standard protocols exchange points. Those are the bits that are BIM. Those are the bits that define how we transfer the data, we communicate with each other.” For more information about Tech Soft 3D visit www.techsoft3d.com For more information about Keysoft Solutions visit www.keysoftsolutions.com

  • Implementing MBD - Costs, Timeline, Process and Misconceptions

    17/07/2017 Duración: 37min

In this episode of Beyond 3D, Jennifer Herron, CEO of Action Engineering, goes deep into what MBD (model-based definition) really means, and the steps a company can and should take if they want to get started implementing MBD. Jennifer highlights some real scenarios to illustrate cost, timeline and the process that a company can and should follow when looking to implement an MBD strategy. “I think a best-in-class organization, whether you're a software developer or you're producing products, always is continuously improving, and I would suggest that everybody look at model-based definition as a continuous improvement program over what they have in place today, so that they can bang out some efficiencies in their processes and recover some costs.” For more information about Action Engineering, visit https://www.action-engineering.com/

  • It's a Hardware Renaissance

    03/04/2017 Duración: 28min

In this episode of Beyond 3D we talk to one of the pioneers of 3D CAD, Jon Stevenson, who helped turn GrabCAD into the largest online collaboration community in the 3D CAD world, and is now VP of Global Software at Stratasys. We talk about how file sharing has evolved, the new challenges that pop up as technologies get more advanced, and how hardware is cool again! And if you’re a company that has always done software, how do you manage getting into the hardware game quickly and successfully? Traditional manufacturers aren’t the only ones facing new challenges navigating trends such as IoT, 3D printing, AR, VR, etc. Snapchat is making video streaming glasses! What?!?! It’s a whole new world and it’s anyone’s game. And the pressure to iterate faster, reduce cycle times will only continue to increase – to the point where we are creating as we are producing, almost simultaneously. Insane? Maybe. But that’s where we’re headed. Listen to our latest edition of Beyond 3D and let us know what you think!

  • MBD is a Process, Not a Product

    21/02/2017 Duración: 27min

In this episode we talk with Chad Jackson of Lifecyle Insights to clear up some misconceptions around model based definition (MBD) and model based enterprise (MBE). The biggest thing to remember is that MBD and MBE isn’t a “thing” or a “product” – you can’t just say “let’s do MBD” or ask a services company “can you do MBD?” It’s a process, and when done properly, companies can see tremendous benefits to productivity and the bottom line. “There's all sorts of kind of levels of maturity. But let me step back and talk about misconceptions. I think in the industry, we have talked about going drawingless for real long time. I mean, this is a concept that started even 20 years ago, is when we started talking about that idea. I think it's a good vision. I think the idea that you can jump directly from using a 2D drawing as the authoritative source that defines the design, jumping from that to a 3D model that's fully annotated and not taking steps in between. I think that's a misconception. I just don't see a lo

  • Do you Zip files? You should 3D PDF them instead for better, structured communication

    24/01/2017 Duración: 36min

There are millions of 3D PDFs used in different manufacturing workflows every day, across the globe. So why are there still so many misconceptions about how 3D PDFs can be used? How versatile they are, how much better they are than Zipping a ton files together and hoping the recipient can figure out how to view them all. The 3D PDF Consortium was founded for exactly this purpose – to provide education and awareness to the market about 3D PDFs. We talk with Jerry McFeeters, the Executive Director, and Phil Spreier, Technical Director to dispel some of the bigger myths when it comes to 3D PDF creation and use. “I always think about PDF as kind of being data with a purpose, or data with a context. You can use it in an engineering process. You can create a document that has a bunch of different data that when you put it all together, it helps to describe something in a way that it's very clear and relevant to the person who gets that document. That's when it helps to set it apart from some of these other data

  • Services and component technologies take the complexity out of dealing with today's tech trends

    15/12/2016 Duración: 29min

In this episode of Beyond 3D we talk about services for the first time. And who better to talk about services for the engineering world other than AMC Bridge, one of the largest engineering service providers in the world. As technology has changed so dramatically over the past 15 years, even just the past 5 years, even companies who have internal services departments are struggling to keep up with all the different tech developments – from mobile, cloud, AR, VR, the Internet of Things, etc. Therefore, companies of all sizes are turning to service providers to help them stay current with their applications, and ultimately stay competitive. One great example is one of the fastest growing PLM companies, ARIS. Their expertise is in PLM, but to help their customers address some of these other technological challenges takes time, discipline and requires modern cooperation tools and modern visualization tools, and they don't have any experience with this. In addition, companies avoid adopting new technologies

  • Having a digital strategy for big data is critical, and both small and large manufacturers can do it

    08/11/2016 Duración: 27min

In our third episode of Beyond 3D, we talk with Chris Jones, CEO of Actify, about why it is critical for manufacturers of all sizes to have a digital strategy to consume, visualize and act on the quintillions of bytes being generated every day. It’s not a question of “should I do this” but rather “when and how will I do this?” Relational databases just don’t cut it anymore – the massive amounts of data being generated need to be able to be mined for specific things, visualized and acted upon quickly and easily. The technology is getting there, and is more accessible to manufacturers of all sizes – yes, even the small guys. “Overall the stats and the estimates are the only 10% of all this data that we're collecting is being a) collected and then b) collated. In the manufacturing industry we're down 1 or 2%. I think there's opportunities in all industries but particularly in manufacturing companies because they're also producing a lot more data from their products on how it's used and so on and so forth, war

  • 3D PDF is a Home Run, and Any Company of Any Size Can Afford to Implement It

    10/10/2016 Duración: 26min

Beyond 3D Podcast with David Ewing of Aras Corp – 3D PDF is a Home Run, and Any Company of Any Size Can Afford to Implement It In this episode of the Beyond 3D podcast, David Ewing from the Aras Corporation talks about how he and his team implemented a 3D PDF strategy for a project while he was at B/E Aerospace that ended up saving hundreds of hours, and hundreds of thousands of dollars. And it was so simple and effective, that using 3D PDF has now become the standard on nearly every project. "Yeah, this had a very big customer in Boeing, but the spend was very, very low. We also started with a relativity complex problem. This is something really, in my opinion, it's a home run project. You're a small company, you make widgets that you supply to some other company, this is a great opportunity to streamline your engineering process. You can actually remove some of the drafting steps and go to a 3D PDF. You're getting extremely accurate data in there, machinable, in fact, that's surfacing that are extremely

  • If 3D Data is So Valuable, Why Isn't Everyone Using It?

    12/09/2016 Duración: 27min

In this first pilot episode of the Beyond 3D podcast, we talk about the most common topics and challenges that come up in conversations with customers, partners and industry influencers – everything from complexity and process challenges, to how to deal with tech trends such as cloud and mobile. "The further you get away from an engineering department, the more companies struggle with getting 3D data into people's hands, and I think that's the big challenge is, 3D is absolutely- there's so much information included in 3D data, and there are people that are outside of engineering; procurement, suppliers, there's all of these people in the chain that really could benefit from access to the data, and that's the challenge is, how do you get that 3D data into people's hands so they can make good decisions based on what's happening in engineering?” Our guest is TJ McCue, writer for Forbes and many other publications, and famous for his 3DRV cross-country adventure. http://www.forbes.com/sites/tjmccue/ https://h
