After a long hiatus we are back with a new episode highlighting the excellent Robin Williams in a serious role that may be his best. We're talking One Hour Photo, where Williams shines as a happy-go-lucky photo technician who has become infatuated by a family after developing their photos for years. It's an interesting psychological thriller told through the stalker's eyes, and we talk about the great cinematography, timely themes, and how much we appreciate that shoutout to Neon Genesis Evangelion. This is a trip of a film, and we contemplate reality, madness, the noir qualities of the movie, Sam Neill's performance, and the special effects by KNB. Blood and Black Rum Podcast continues its coverage of all of the most recent Marvel movies with a look at the small but extremely fun Ant-Man and the Wasp. We're big fans of Paul Rudd, and so he can pretty much do no wrong in a film, but we find that this movie is uniquely less about Ant-Man than it is about Hank Pym and the Wasp. That leads to some interesting reveals, some Macguffins, and some great fight scenes using seamless CGI. We had a lot of fun with this light-hearted romp, and we think it shows in this episode. We have to admit, we weren't looking forward to doing Halloween II, Rob Zombie's sequel to his remake, on the show. We had already done the first one for Remakeoween and, if you listened to that episode, you know that we hated pretty much everything about it. Halloween II doubles down on all of that, plus it adds a mystical horse and Sheri Moon Zombie draped in white. It's terrible, and truthfully there's not much more to say about it. Yet we get a full hour of conversation about the wretched thing, trying to imagine how the producers felt about buying a horse, how Zombie managed to get Sheri Moon Zombie in a movie again, and how Scout Taylor-Compton's Laurie has transitioned into a very generic punk girl. Our new episode takes on a horror classic from Dario Argento: Suspiria! Just in time for the new remake this November, we're revisiting this ghoulish film that has become such a staple of the genre, and it's Martin's first time viewing. That means he doesn't have the nostalgic factor that Ryne does; however, we talk the colors, the music, the surplus order of barbed wire, the narrative (or lack thereof), and try to guess the themes of the film. We said we were going to do a western, so we're doing a western! On the docket for this episode is Sam Peckinpah's classic 1973 film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, a classic caper film where a sheriff chases an outlaw. In this case, it's James Coburn as the grizzled Pat Garrett and Kris Kristofferson as an old man playing the young Billy the Kid. We talk about Peckinpah's simple plot, the different cuts of the film, how both titular characters are developed, and of course we talk about Bob Dylan's awkward appearances in every scene. We're back a little late for St. Patrick's Day, but we're still celebrating with our annual tradition: the Leprechaun series! We're on to Leprechaun 3 this year, when Warwick Davis goes to Las Vegas for some reason. You can bet there's gambling, boobies, and even more weirdly funny sequences in this sequel, but even with all of the tongue-in-cheek humor, it's hard to truly appreciate this film. We try our best, and we muddle through with a very erratic episode as we try to discuss Leprechaun 3 even when it's hard to put into words how ridiculous it really is. Since we did all of the other Death Wish films, we thought it would be important to do this Eli Roth remake as well. Joke's on us - this is the opposite of an important film. It's forgettable, boring, and certainly much less gritty than the original Charles Bronson film, and it also has an uncomfortable obsession with revenge murder. Roth doesn't even have his flair for gore too much here, and Bruce Willis is basically a zombie. Did we like anything about the film? I guess you'll have to listen to find out.
