In the fourth installment of our Death Wish Series, we take on the incredibly 80s-set Death Wish 4: The Crackdown - if the cocaine doesn't define it, then the roller rinks and arcades will. This is, per Ryne, a "stupid" film, but it's easy to see why it's also quite enjoyable: ridiculous action scenes make up about 70% of the film and it has the feel of a video game where Paul Kersey continually gets mission objectives from his boss. The film is basically a recap of the original with some new footage thrown in involving Billy's brother Ricky, and in general terms no one would ever think this is a good film. But from a comical perspective, Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 is pure genius, a hilariously bad horror movie that features Eric Freeman in a defining roll. Our Halloween Series this year takes on all seven of the Saw films, and we start in chronological order with Saw. This was the first in this torture porn genre and arguably the best, with the most manageable plot that focused less on gore than twisty puzzles. However, there are still a lot of problems stylistically and rudimentarily, and we definitely point those out. Tenebrae is a highly renowned giallo film, recently released on a single-disc Blu-Ray by Synapse Films. Dario Argento's direction is fantastic in this whodunnit about a novelist targeted by a sadistic killer using his latest novel as inspiration, and many themes are prominent throughout this slow burn that uses death as an art form. We talk about giallo in general first, then dive into Tenebrae itself - its metacommentary, its ideas about human corruption and depravity, and of course the non-Goblin soundtrack.
