Episode 197: Festivus Series | CHRISTMAS EVIL
17/12/2021 Duración: 01h46sWe continue our Festivus Series in 2021 with Christmas Evil, a film that Martin really didn't like. But that's okay, because Ryne really digs it, so we get a good discussion going about what works, what doesn't work, and why some people hate it and some people really love it. Christmas Evil is a weird movie, and it takes some appreciation to get past some of the rawer editing and absurdities. However, we see it from both sides, making for a good dialogue about the film. We hope you feel the same! We're drinking District 96's Sleeveless Flannel Winter Ale! Approximate timeline 0:00-7:00 Intro 7:00-15:00 Beer talk 15:00-end Christmas Evil Check back all holiday season for new weekly Christmas episodes! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/support

Episode 196: Festivus Series | BETTER WATCH OUT
10/12/2021 Duración: 01h16minThis week we're tackling Better Watch Out (not to be confused with our episode on Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 3: Better Watch Out!) for Festivus! This one's a lot of fun - it takes one part Scream, one part Home Alone, and a bunch of small elements from other horror movies (I'm calling out Black Christmas too) and throws them together for a humorous but also brutal romp that has moments of greatness. Listen in to see what we thought of this holiday horror! Also, we're drinking Southern Tier's Frosted Sugar Cookie Imperial Ale! On this episode, we have the pleasure of premiering a promo for The Cult Film Companion. It's another movie podcast like us, but with an even greater emphasis on covering cult films! You can catch the promo at around 11:30 in the show, and do us a favor and head to their podcast page and join their Facebook group! Episode 195: Festivus Series | BLACK CHRISTMAS (2006)
03/12/2021 Duración: 01h18minFestivus Series 2021 starts now! We're returning to the lore of Billy and Agnes in our look at Black Christmas (sometimes stylized Black Xmas) from 2006, a remake of the original film that throws in quite a few odes and tries to give a LOT more backstory. That's not entirely successful, and we talk about why. But we also discuss the holiday festivities, the themes, the cookie-cutter protagonists, and a whole lot more... and we come to a conclusion why we don't return to this movie each year. Also, we're drinking Ommegang's Everything Nice strong blonde ale, perfect for the festive season. Approximate timeline 0:00-10:00 Intro 10:00-20:00 Beer talk 20:00-end Black Christmas Check back all month long as we cover some holiday classics (and some not-so-classics)! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/support

Episode 194: Thanksgiving Special | BLOOD RAGE
19/11/2021 Duración: 01h11minWe finally take on one of the most famous horror Thanksgiving movies: Blood Rage! We both agree that this is like a lower-budget, Thanksgiving version of Silent Night, Deadly Night, just way less effective. We talk about the randomness of the movie, the feeling that a lot of this was ad libbed, the gory violence, the interminable length, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Ommegang/Firestone Walker's Neon Giants NEIPA collaboration! Approximate timeline 0:00 - 10:00 Intro 10:00-17:00 Beer talk 17:00-end Blood Rage Happy Thanksgiving everyone! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/support

Episode 193: So Creepy It's Carpenter IX | HALLOWEEN KILLS
29/10/2021 Duración: 01h22minOur final episode for 2021's Halloween season is a cheat with the John Carpenter thing; he didn't direct Halloween Kills, but he did contribute the characters and film score. But of course we had to cover this sequel to the 2018's requel, and we take a lot of time to channel our frustrations at this follow-up. We enjoyed 2018's Halloween quite a bit, and while we did have fun with Halloween Kills, we spend most of this episode discussing the many areas it goes wrong - and then try to cover a few places we really liked. Hope you enjoyed our series, check back with us in a couple of weeks for some holiday podcasting! Oh yeah, we're drinking Guinness' Nitro Cold Brew Coffee beer. Episode 192: So Creepy It's Carpenter VIII | THE WARD
23/10/2021 Duración: 01h31sOur final (?) episode in our So Creepy It's Carpenter series is on Carpenter's last (?) directorial film The Ward! Ryne thought he had seen this before but he was mistaken; so we both experience this psychological thriller for the first time and discuss how middle of the road it truly is. In fact, it's so difficult to talk about because of how aggressively mediocre it is. However, we give it a shot! Also, we're drinking Genesee's Cranberry-Orange Kellerbier. Approximate timeline 0:00-8:00 Intro 8:00-15:00 Beer talk 15:00-end The Ward We have one more Carpenter-related surprise for you next week, so tune in for our Halloween finale! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/support

Episode 191: So Creepy It's Carpenter VII | VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (1995)
15/10/2021 Duración: 57minWe're nearing the end of our Carpenter series, but that doesn't mean we won't go out with a bang! In Village of the Damned, we take a look at the creepy kid flick based off a prior movie that was based off a novel. While we note that this doesn't exactly feel like a Carpenter film, it does a good enough job of getting the eerie and the moralism across. We talk about Christopher Reeve, empathy, and Kirstie Alley being here, plus we get in a couple nods to Mark Hamill. Sorry about the clicks and keyboard clacks at the beginning - couldn't edit that out as we were doing research! Also, we're drinking Beer Tree's Trippy Tree Mango, Pineapple, and Coconut fruited sour. Approximate timeline 0:00-7:00 Intro 7:00-12:00 Beer talk 12:00-end Village of the Damned Continue to tune in as we cover more Carpenter hits and misses! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/support

Episode 190: So Creepy It's Carpenter VI | BODY BAGS
08/10/2021 Duración: 01h14minWe're over halfway through our So Creepy It's Carpenter series and we're tackling another surprisingly great Carpenter film with Body Bags. Shot for Showtime and meant to lead into an anthology TV series, Carpenter provides three very different stories in this 90 minute film, bookended by a great framing story starring Carpenter himself. Carpenter directs two out of the three, with Tobe Hooper providing the last short, and we discuss all three in their entirety. Oh, and we're drinking Ommegang's Hopstate New York IPA! Approximate timeline 0:00-9:00 Intro 9:00-20:00 Beer talk 20:00-end Body Bags Subscribe to us to keep up with our Carpenter shenanigans all Halloween season! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bloodandblackrum/support

Episode 189: So Creepy It's Carpenter V | PRINCE OF DARKNESS
01/10/2021 Duración: 01h13minThis is one of Ryne's favorite Carpenter movies, and we give Prince of Darkness some good treatment on the show by covering the score, the creepy factor, the overwhelming foreboding elements, and a whole lot more. Is it so good, so bad, or so creepy? Listen to the episode to find out! We're also drinking Captain Lawrence/Snyder's of Hanover's Snyder Bier Pretzel Marzen! Episode 188: So Creepy It's Carpenter IV | CHRISTINE
24/09/2021 Duración: 01h15minContinuing our So Creepy It's Carpenter Halloween series, we tackle a surprisingly successful offfering from Carpenter, and also one of the best Stephen King film adaptations: Christine. This is a tough story to adapt for the big screen because of its limited scope and with the primary antagonist being an inanimate object. However, we talk about the successful use of emotional stakes and tension throughout to keep things interesting even for a 110 minute long film. We also discuss Carpenter's excellent theme, the '80s sociopathic bully antics, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Fidens' The Butcher double IPA! Episode 187: So Creepy It's Carpenter III | GHOSTS OF MARS
18/09/2021 Duración: 01h07minHey, we knew we'd have to do the crappy stuff too when we were doing a Carpenter series for Halloween. That brings us to Ghosts of Mars, probably Carpenter's worst film. It has a lot of poor decisions that lead to a really boring, awful movie - and quite possibly the lowest rating Ryne has ever given on the show. We talk about the wipes and fades (you know what we mean), the terrible neo-noir dialogue, have a disagreement about the choreography, and so much more. Be ready to laugh with us about this turkey. Oh yeah, we're also drinking Druthers Brewing Co.'s Oktoberfest! Episode 186: So Creepy It's Carpenter II | THE FOG
10/09/2021 Duración: 01h06minContinuing our Halloween season spent with John Carpenter's filmography, we turn to the moody mistiness of 1980's The Fog, one of Carpenter's better films and yet still falling somewhere in the middle of his best output. We're disappointed with the lack of Tom Atkins mustache; we query whether Jamie Lee Curtis or Adrienne Barbeau tops the hotness meter; we dish out some fire at the founders of Antonio Bay who couldn't stand to live even a mile away from a leper colony. And we have a lot of fun talking about the film over the course of an hour, and we hope you enjoy our coverage. Oh yeah, we're drinking Leinenkugel's Collaboration Lager, and amber lager in collab with Hofbräu München! Episode 185: So Creepy It's Carpenter I | VAMPIRES
03/09/2021 Duración: 01h12minAll Halloween season we will be bringing you the So Creepy It's Carpenter series, a look at John Carpenter's filmography including both the good and the bad. For our first spotlight, we start right in the middle of that divide with Vampires from 1998, one of Carpenter's better late-career movies. We talk about the KNB effects, James Wood (an asshole), the Carpenter western-tinged soundtrack, the lack of a directorial signature, and more! No specific beer talk this week, it's just good to be back again (remotely). 30/07/2021 Duración: 01h13minRed Hot '80s Action summer is sweating along and we are taking a look at Reb Brown's masterpiece, his opus, Strike Commando. If you've never seen the film, think First Blood: Part II but with a lot lower budget and with some extremely interesting dialogue choices. We're having a laugh at the whole plot, admiring Reb Brown's muscles, and yelling "JAKODAAAA!" a lot. Expect some good fun at the film's expense here. 16/07/2021 Duración: 01h11minOn our new episode for Red Hot '80s Action Summer, we are talking about the inestimable Chuck Norris in one of his classic terrorist shoot-em-up films, Invasion U.S.A. We touch on the sheer ridiculousness of the film, Chuck's fabulous red mullet, the inferiority of the US National Guard, and the homoerotic undertones at play here. Episode 182: Red Hot '80s Action Summer II | POLICE STORY
03/07/2021 Duración: 01h16minContinuining our hot '80s action summer, we're taking a look at perhaps Jackie Chan's finest film Police Story - subbed, not dubbed! Here, we marvel at Chan's ingenuity with the stunts while also commenting on the simplicity of the film's plot. We talk Hong Kong drugs, the various stunt sequences, rate our favorites, and also comment on the odd inclusion of some misogyny in Chan's character. Also, we're drinking DuClaw Brewing's Lil Sour Me America, just in time for July 4th! Episode 181: Red Hot '80s Action Summer I | PREDATOR
18/06/2021 Duración: 01h15minWe're starting our Red Hot '80s Action Summer off with a jungle-tinged bang! Arnie's quotable film Predator is on the docket, and as we rewatched this John McTiernan action/sci-fi/slasher hybrid we couldn't help but feel disappointed with our rose-colored glasses view of this nostalgic classic, because it just doesn't hold up as well as we thought. We talk about those criticisms and joke about the soundtrack, the dialogue, the mystical Native American trope, and which form of Predator we'd rather... well, you know. We're also drinking Beer Tree Brewing's Layered: Maple, Brown Sugar, Blueberry Parfait Sour. Episode 180: THE WICKER MAN (1973)
04/06/2021 Duración: 01h11minIt's summertime, and of course we need to visit the island of Summerisle for a quick jaunt to a cult led by Christopher Lee. We talk about the excellent casting in the film, the heavy religious themes, Britt Eklund's booty dance, the missing deleted scene, Lee's hair(piece?), and the shocking finale. We're definitely fans of this crazy slow-burn movie, and I think you can hear in this episode. Let us know what you think! Episode 179: SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW
21/05/2021 Duración: 01h17minWe've done every other Saw film (1-7 in a marathon), so it was inevitable that we'd have to head out to the theater to see Spiral: From the Book of Saw. And for the most part, we liked this one okay - it's definitely better than Jigsaw, though its writers are the same, and Chris Rock is really doing the best he can with what he's got. The traps are cool, but there are still some major issues. Listen to the whole thing and let us know what you thought of this new reboot of the series! A note: we recorded remotely (for the last time) and we did have some issues near the end of the recording where the remote recording cut out some content and caused some skips and pauses. For the record, Ryne rated this a 7/10 creepy little marionette dolls. We're also drinking Founders' All Day Vacay Session Wheat Ale. Episode 178: MORTAL KOMBAT (2021)
30/04/2021 Duración: 01h23minWe're back! We took a long hiatus, but one thing helped us decide to come back: the new Mortal Kombat reboot. Being one of Martin's favorite franchises, we just had to take a look at the new R-rated film from director Simon McQuoid. Expect some nostalgic waxing about the original games, discussion on the film's storyline, groaning about this being more like an introductory lead-up to a sequel, and more! It's good to be back. On this show, we have Beer Tree Brew Co.'s Virtuosity - Blood Orange, Mango, and Marshmallow, as well as Artisanal Brew Works' Warheads Extreme Sour Watermelon Hard Seltzer.
