Unlock earlier gardening with weather trends [Ep. 485]
23/03/2024 Duración: 23minDon't start gardening yet. Even though you can start gardening outdoors earlier this year in the Carolinas thanks to a change in the USDA's classification of Plant Hardiness Zones for North Carolina and South Carolina, we've got at least one more cold snap this week. This week on the Carolina Weather Group, Candice Jordan hosts a special conversation with her colleague from the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina. Preparing for the 2024 solar eclipse [Ep. 484]
14/03/2024 Duración: 10min#space #science #eclipse #northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx The Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Unlike 2017, the totality will not pass directly through the Carolinas. But still, at about 80% totality, there will still be some solar eclipse to experience in both North Carolina and South Carolina - weather permitting. This week on the Carolina Weather Group, James Brierton talks with Gina DiBraccio, Deputy Director of Heliophysics, NASA GSFC, about what we can expect to see, how we can prepare for the eclipse, and the scientific discoveries that are made possible by a solar eclipse. We also discuss space weather, solar storms, and the impacts of solar radiation on technology such as GPS and radio communication. Still need solar eclipse glasses? In this episode, we explain how you can make solar eclipse glasses at home. You can also reuse your glasses from the 2017 Eclipse or check retailers. While dem

AI severe weather alerts [Ep. 481]
22/02/2024 Duración: 24minNOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) has provided manual translations of weather forecasts and warnings in Spanish for the past 30 years, but now the agency has a new tool to be more accurate, efficient and equitable. Through a series of pilot projects over the past few years, NWS forecasters have been training artificial intelligence (AI) software for weather, water and climate terminology in Spanish and Simplified Chinese, the most common languages in the United States after English. NWS will add Samoan and Vietnamese next, and more languages in the future. Two of the nearly dozen locations where these AI-translated severe weather bulletins are being tested are in the Carolinas. This week, James Brierton talks with Chris Rohrbach, a meteorologist and web developer at the National Weather Service in Columbia, South Carolina, where this artificial intelligence experiment is being tested alongside locations such as Greenville-Spartanburg, SC. You’re invited to try out the translated severe weather bulletins

The man inside NC's decommissioned lighthouse [Ep. 477]
18/01/2024 Duración: 43minIt's been three years since the Carolina Weather Group first talked with Richard Neal, the owner of the decommissioned Frying Pan Shoals Tower off the coast of North Carolina. James Brierton and Shea Gibson caught up with Richard recently during the Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon. Here now is that updated conversation, followed by an encore presentation of our first interview from 2020. Frying Pan Tower is located 32 miles off the coast of North Carolina and rises 135' above the Atlantic Ocean. It helps provide safety to Mariners in the Atlantic Ocean, is used for environmental research and education studies, and is a shelter to a natural ecosystem for marine wildlife. Its location makes it a prime spot to observe tropical weather off the Carolina coast, including a direct hit by Hurricane Irene in 2011. Weather conditions are observed on-board by weather sensors and a live streaming webcam. In 2010, the government placed the Frying Pan Tower up for auction, with the winning bid going to R

Ice, then storms in Carolina weather [Ep. 475]
04/01/2024 Duración: 32minAn emerging weather pattern will bring a chance of winter weather, including ice, snow and sleet, to portions of North Carolina Friday night into Saturday. The best chance of wintry precipitation will be in the mountains of western North Carolina, including Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock and Hickory, but could also spill over into portions of the Piedmont and Triad, including Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem. Then an early forecast preview into next week shows a chance of strong storms across portions of both North Carolina and South Carolina Tuesday into Wednesday. The Carolina Weather Group's Scotty Powell and Frank Strait, joined by WFMY's Christian Morgan and future WXII meteorologist Dylan Hudler, provide forecast analysis and insight into Carolina weather impacts expected from these two January storm systems. #northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx

Trifecta: Jim Cantore, Mike Bettes and Ken Graham
28/12/2023 Duración: 35minOur 12-hour Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon had lots of plans. Lots of meetings. Lots of choreographing. And yet we still knew: It's live for 12-hours. Expect the unexpected. For me, as the technical director, the hour that stands out the most was the 4 p.m. eastern hour, when through a series of unexpected events, three big guests ended up live at the same time. The hosts that hour came from our friends at the WeatherBrains podcast. As the first weather podcast, they have a lot of great connections and friends. Among others, they had arranged for visits from the Weather Channel's Jim Cantore and Mike Bettes. They had also arranged a conversation with Ken Graham, the National Weather Service director. But the three weren't scheduled to appear at the same time. And yet, it happened. It was a memorable moment for me. Three huge names in our weather industry were, for all intents and purposes, suddenly on a Zoom call hosted by my computer. (Even when you didn't see CWG hosts on-screen, the entire teleth

Brad Panovich and Mark Sudduth on the 2023 hurricane season [Ep. 473]
14/12/2023 Duración: 28minEvery year, we love catching up with North Carolina's own Mark Sudduth, a storm chaser and founder of hurricanetrack.com. Each year, Mark shares with us his amazing stories of chasing and documenting some of Mother Nature's most intense tropical storms. Mark and his filmmaking are known for capturing footage where humans cannot. By securing cameras inside the path of a tropical storm or hurricane without the need for a human operator, Mark is able to safely capture amazing video of Mother Nature's true strength. For this year's conversation looking back at the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, Mark was invited to join the Carolina Weather Group and our friends from Weather Brains, Storm Front Breaks, and Chaser Chat for the Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon. In that telethon's 8 p.m. hour, Mark joined us for that special conversation, which was helmed by guest host Brad Panovich of WCNC Charlotte. Thanks to your generous support, our telethon was able to raise over $7,500 for the Ame
