In our Traditional message, Andy shares with us from 2 Samuel 9.  We see the story of David and Mephibosheth, Saul's grandson.  David should have killed him (according to the world), not welcomed him. Yet David brought him to the table. Our world needs community and welcome. Who can we bring to the table? 

For God so loved the world. This verse is the lens through which I look at the Bible. I interpret the verses I don’t understand through John 3:16, Which is how I understand God. God so loved the world. That means everyone. The folks I agree with, the folks I disagree with. The folks who share my theology and politics and the folks who do not share my theology and politics. We see in John 3 the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus. As with all of John, there is a lot of symbolism going on here.  Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night. What does that mean?  It is speaking of a time, yes, but for John, there is more than that. In this Gospel, light and dark have deep and special meanings.  We also take some time to talk about who the Pharisees were. While they were misguided, their intent and their origin are not bad. They wanted to follow God and obey His law. Their problem was that they focused more on their man-made law than they did on God’s Holy Law. We see something a little unusual in John 2.  Jesus is just starting His public ministry, and here, He cleanses the Temple. Now, in the other three Gospels, one of the last things He does is cleanse the Temple. Yet, here, He does it early. Does He cleanse it twice?  That is possible. Remember, John does not answer “who, what, when, and where,” and John answers “why?”  Why does Jesus cleanse the Temple?  To show that something much better is coming. Today, we see Jesus’ first miracle. There are a lot of interesting things here. We see how important a wedding is to the culture. Weddings were huge deals; they were parties. They were celebrations. It would have been very shameful for the wedding to have run out of wine.  That is why Mary notices this. Although this may seem trivial, it is an act of kindness by her. But all the things that are interesting about this miracle to me, the thing that always stands out to me is this. Who were the only people to see what Jesus was doing? In our Traditional message from August 11, 2024, Andy shares with us from Revelation 12: 10-11.  The Devil is defeated by the blood of the lamb and the power of our testimony. When we tell folks about what Jesus has done in our lives, it drives out the darkness.

Jesus calls Phillip today, and much like Andrew, Phillip goes and tells a friend about Jesus.  Phillip tells Nathaniel about Jesus, but unlike Peter, Nataniel, at first, does not believe that Jesus can be who Phillip says. He replies, what good can come from Nazareth?  He prejudged Jesus, and because of that, he almost missed what God would do in His life through Jesus. It is easy in our lives to judge others.  It is easy in our lives to write off others before we know them. It is easy for us to miss what God may be doing. We see the first two disciples that Jesus calls today, Andrew and then Peter.  There’s a lot that we can consider in this passage. First, we can remind ourselves of who our Andrews are, who told us about Jesus. Second, we can ask ourselves, who do we need to tell about Jesus? We see in all of this that they were seeking to know who Jesus was. Friends, if we seek after Jesus, we will find Him. He is there. If we seek, we will find. We see two approaches to life today. First, we see the religious leaders asking John questions. Who are you? What are you doing? Why are you doing it?  What is all this about?  Then, we see John and his approach to Jesus.  We see him lift up Jesus, point to Jesus, and exactly Him. The first path is a path of cynicism, and the second path is a path of humility.  I, along with many of you, may be cynical. And if we are not careful, that can come from and result in arrogance.  Humility can lead us to true faith. Today, which path will we choose? Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. One of the greatest books of Christian theology ever written is On the Incarnation by St. Athanasius. This beautiful book dives deeper into what we see in our text today. The Word becomes flesh and lives among us. This is a powerful truth. We do not serve a distant and foreign God but a God who knows us and has faced what we face. Jesus became one of us to save all of us.  As God, He could perfectly atone for our sins and grant us forgiveness. The incarnation is one of the great miracles of God. Today, we’ll begin our time together in John’s Gospel.  John’s Gospel has a very specific purpose for us. While Matthew, Mark, and Luke answer the “who, what, when, and where” questions, John answers the “why.”  He is showing us “why” Jesus came, and his entire Gospel is written, as we see at the end of chapter 20, so that we may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah.  We’ll begin our time together in John’s Gospel by looking at his Christmas story, and it looks very different from the others we see in the Bible.  Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In our Traditional sermon from August 4, 2024, Andy shares with us from 1 John 3: 7-8.  Jesus gives us this mission - to destroy the works of the devil. When we take the good news of Jesus with us, wherever we are, the light drives out the dark!

What does it mean to be a welcoming church? What does Jesus' Table look like? Who gets to come?  We see today that Jesus loves and invites the entire world. That means we have to as well.

When we are found in Jesus, we will be like calves, skipping out of their stalls. We will have joy.  Joy is a beautiful thing. It is not based on circumstance. That is happiness. We are happy because we have this or that. I am happy when my team wins. Joy is deeper. Joy is not found based on what we have, but joy is found in who we are, or perhaps better said, based on whose we are.  We have joy because we have Jesus and our life is found in Him. In our reading today, we see the Lord say that those who revere Him, those who ponder Him, He sees, and remembers them. On the day of judgment, they will be His special possession. He will treasure and care for them. We need to root ourselves in that reality, that He loves and He cares for us. And we need to be reminded that our safety and protection do not come from anything in this world, but it comes only from God. He is the one who protects us. Today’s reading looks at something that isn’t always fun to talk about: tithing.  This is a subject that I think has a lot to teach us, but it’s something that is often misunderstood. Today, we’ll look at the original context of what is happening in this passage, along with the spiritual reality of what it can mean for me and for you today. We are told today that the Lord will send His messenger to prepare for His coming judgment and His coming salvation. We are told to turn from our sins and return to the Lord.  When we return to God, He returns to us. The Lord is never too far. When we take a step towards Him, He comes running towards us. Today, we see Malachi echo themes in Ezra and Nehemiah. The people need to be very careful where their allegiances lie. They are cautioned to avoid relationships that pull them away from God. That is what happened to the people before the Exile, and it is a danger in this new world. The same is true for us today. We need a variety of relationships. If we, as Christians, do not have any relationships with folks who are not Christian, how will they ever hear the good news? How will they know of Jesus if we do not tell them? We need those relationships. But, we need to stay firmly rooted in the Word and firmly rooted in Christian community. In our Traditional service on July 21, 2024, Andy shared with us from John 14: 5-6. We are an evangelical church. That label is thrown around a lot in our world. What does it mean to say that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and that no one comes to the Father but through Him?  Let's be careful to build our church only on the rock of Jesus.

Today we see the Lord remind the priests that they have lost their reverence of Him. As much as we need to know the gentleness and kindness of God, we need to understand the fact that He is “other” than us. He is different from us. He is not human.  We need the proper reverence for who God is.  As Job says at the end of His book, “I put my hand over my mouth, I have spoken much too soon.” We need to never, ever, ever lose the reverence and awe that we should have for God.
