  • Teach the Gospel using Metaphors and Analogies with Taylor Halverson – Episode 5 – LDS MissionCast

    01/03/2018 Duración: 43min

Our first interview is a two part episode…sort of.  I interviewed Dr. Taylor Halverson who is a teaching and learning consultant at BYU. In other words, he helps teach BYU professors to be better teachers. He offers some much needed advice to all gospel teachers, but especially missionaries. In this first part we discuss the do’s and don’t of teaching the gospel using Metaphor or Analogy. In part 2 we offer an approach that Taylor calls, Talking is not Teaching. It is a complete re-framing of the approach to teaching the gospel that mirrors much of what is being rolled out in Sunday schools and in Priesthood and Relief society with the Come, Follow Me style of gospel learning. This episode is one you are going to want to listen to a number of times to make sure you have these things ingrained in your approach to teaching the gospel. Part 2 will be on next weeks episode, so stay tuned for that. Link from our interview with Taylor: http://ctl.byu.edu/tip/found-metaphors-strategy-applied-creative-thinking   F

    15/02/2018 Duración: 47min

Missionaries are not immune to the same mental health challenges experienced by a growing portion of the world's population. However, missionaries are typically called to learn their language, learn the gospel, and then teach the gospel so as to bring people unto Christ without much education on this increasingly relevant issue. Out guest on this episode is clinical social worker, Annie Edwards (mother to our host, Kelsey), shares some basic information on the signs of common mental health issues like anxiety and depression, as well as some discussion on best practices when missionaries encounter the mental health issues in themselves or in those whom they associate. This episode also features our first interview with an outgoing missionary, Tanner Bennett, who shares his inspiring story of how he fought to overcome some challenges to be called on his mission. We end the episode with our Book of Mormon Challenge. All the music in this episode is arranged and/or performed by host, Kelsey Edwards. For full ver

Daniel Peterson (left) and Nick Galieti (right - host) In this fascinating episode, Nick Galieti sits down with legendary BYU Scholar, Daniel C. Peterson, long time professor of Islamic Studies, and founder of The Mormon Interpreter Foundation (a tremendous resource for LDS Scholarship). We talk about the various ways in which Mormonism and Islam are similar, and what ways they are different, as well as some cultural know-how to avoid awkward conversations, or perhaps other missteps that could result in damage to cherished relationships between members of the two faiths. We ended up finding out that this subject seems to be of such importance that the First Presidency has asked Daniel Peterson to write an article for the Ensign on the same subject as our interview! While missionaries specifically going to Africa or Europe will get some valuable information from this episode, anyone anywhere in the world can come to know, and appreciate one of the largest religions in the world as well as how we can more fait
