COVID-19: Impact on Youth
21/11/2020 Duración: 25minPUBLISHED: 21/11/2020 Youth is the hope of our future according to Jose Rizal. How are they enduring this pandemic? We’ve been locked down or under restrictions since March, and while youth are dealing with the stresses that come with the pandemic, it seems to have opened their eyes to other issues facing society. Mental health concerns, financial worries and the recovery are all on their minds. While the study shows that this far in to the pandemic, young Canadians are doing OK, there is an impact on the family, society, and employment prospects. ———————————— GUESTS: Oksana Kishchuk - Consultant at Abacus Data -https://abacusdata.ca/team/oksana-kishchuk/ Nora Spinks - CEO at Vanier Institute of the Family - https://vanierinstitute.ca/nora-spinks/ Kelsey Beson - Operations Manager at Children First Canada -https://childrenfirstcanada.org/fullbio#kelsey-beson ———————————— REFERENCES: https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/covid-19-poll-canadian-youth-the-most-impacted-by-pandemic-lockdown-848074531.html https:/

COVID-19: Promising Vaccines
13/11/2020 Duración: 23minPUBLISHED: 11/13/2020 The world has watched and waited for a COVID-19 vaccine. Could it be here by the end of the year? This week, Pfizer announced some promising if not spectacular results from their testing of a vaccine - one that Canada has pre-ordered 20 million of. This vaccine requires two shots. so that 20 million only covers 10 million people. Earlier this year on the Unpublished Cafe, we asked the question How long did you think it would take to have a safe and effective vaccine!? Overwhelmingly, you estimated it would be longer than 12 months. A vaccine would shift the pandemic on its ear putting us back to as close to normal as we were before Covid. ———————————— GUESTS: Raywat Deonandan - Professor of Epidemiology at University of Ottawa - https://health.uottawa.ca/people/deonandan-raywat David Coletto - President at Abacus Data -https://abacusdata.ca/team/david-coletto/ ———————————— REFERENCES: https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/pfizer-says-early-data-indicates-covid-19-vaccine-is-effective-1.5794899

Canada's Military Propaganda Program
06/11/2020 Duración: 25minPUBLISHED: 07/11/2020 A Canadian Military operation has recently been brought to light - one that has been using propaganda and technology to influence Canadians. The Defence Strategic Communication Group is part of plan that has not been approved by the Minister of National Defence, and is currently under investigation concerning the data it collected on the Canadian people during it’s time assisting LTC homes in Ontario and Quebec. This rings similarly to the Cambridge Analytica scandal of the 2016 US election - what exactly is the Canadian Military hoping to accomplish? And are the Canadian people at risk from their own military? ———————————— GUESTS: Emma Briant - Research Associate in Human Rights at Bard College New York - https://bard.academia.edu/EmmaBriant Scott Taylor - Journalist, ex-Canadian Solider - https://www.hilltimes.com/author/scott-taylor ———————————— REFERENCES: https://ottawacitizen.com/news/national/defence-watch/canadian-military-to-establish-new-organization-to-use-propaganda-other-tec

The US Federal Election
30/10/2020 Duración: 36minPUBLISHED: 31/10/2020 It has to be one of the most pivotal elections in US history as Americans go to the polls on November 3rd. What will be the impact on Canada-US Relations? The countdown is on to determining the next President of the United States. Donald Trump’s unpredictability and protectionist bents rubbed many leaders the wrong way. The US, being Canada’s largest trading partner, has felt that wrath several times over the last four years. We have enjoyed the longest undefended border in the world, but that has been shuttered since March due to the Covid pandemic. ———————————— GUESTS: Mark High - President at Canada-US Business Association - https://www.cusbaonline.com/board-of-directors Frank Graves - President at Ekos Research - https://www.ekospolitics.com/index.php/category/special-interest/commentary-by-frank-graves/ Christopher Sands - Senior Research Professor and Director at Center for Canadian Studies at John Hopkin’s University - https://sais.jhu.edu/users/csands1 ———————————— REFERENCES: ht

Nova Scotia's Indigenous Lobster Crisis
23/10/2020 Duración: 16minPUBLISHED: 23/10/2020 Tensions are running high in Nova Scotia as a conflict between commercial lobster fishers and Indigenous communities. When will the violence end? Parliament held an emergency debate earlier this week following the vandalism and destruction of Indigenous fishing boat, van and traps. At issue is the Mi’kmaq ability to start their own lobster fishery. Under the 1999 Supreme Court ruling, Mi’kmaq bands have the right to fish for a moderate livelihood. While the Supreme Court ruled the treaty gave Indigenous people the right to a moderate living, it left out the definition of moderate living which is the crux of the dispute. ———————————— GUESTS: Dwight Newman - Indigenous Rights and Law Professor at the University of Saskatchewan - https://law.usask.ca/people/faculty/dwight-newman.php Chief Mike Sack - Chief of the Sipekne'katik First Nation’s in Nova Scotia ———————————— REFERENCES: https://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/policing-must-be-adequate-to-keep-everyone-safe-in-indigenous-lobster-dispute-pm-1.

COVID-19: Whistleblowers in Long-Term Care
23/10/2020 Duración: 19minPUBLISHED: 23/10/2020 Fear is coursing through long-term care homes in Canada as the country slips into the second wave of the pandemic. Will it be as fatal as the first wave? During the first wave of Covid about 8 in 10 deaths from the virus were in long-term care. In late spring, the federal government called in the military to help with homes dealing with outbreaks and staff shortages. For many PSW’s and staff, they are the lowest paid yet face the most danger. On top of that, there is little to no whistleblower protection for those workers so they can continue to work in unsafe conditions or take a chance on speaking up, and being fired. Earlier this year, the provinces were presented with recommendation. Now, soon to be debated at Queen’s Park, new legislation which would protect people and organizations from “making an honest effort” from legal action. ———————————— GUESTS: Allan Cuttler - President at Anti-Corruption and Accountability Canada -http://acacanada.ca/author/allan-cutler/ David Hutton -Senio

UnpublishedTV: COVID-19's Second Wave
20/10/2020 Duración: 32minAre we about to see the same lockdowns we enduring in Spring in response to COVID’s second-wave? The number of Covid cases is on the rise in Canada as the provinces struggle with hot spots. Quebec has gone into Red Alert and ordered residents in three hotspots not to socialize outside their household. Medical experts are advising against severe lockdown measures, as the virus only stops spreading for as long as the lockdown is in affect - and the consequences on business are far longer lasting and detrimental. Will this second wave be worse than the first? ———————————— GUESTS: Patrick Saunders-Hastings - Professor of Epidemiology / Gevity Consulting Jasmine Moulton - Ontario Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation Mike Schreiner - Leader Green Party of Ontario, MPP Guelph

COVID-19: Rapid Testing
16/10/2020 Duración: 30minPUBLISHED: 17/10/2020 The need for rapid Covid testing is crucial to flattening this curve. When will they be available? Ottawa and Toronto are coping with more lockdowns, and several areas in Quebec are in the same situation. The federal government has announced the purchase of almost 8 million rapid tests. It was aiming to conduct 200 thousand a day across the country, but currently we’re seeing about 70 thousand completed. The question for many is ‘why is it taking so long?’ for Health Canada to give approval. What exactly is available now? What’s coming down the pipe? Will Canada have the lab capacity to meet the demand? ———————————— GUESTS: Dr Steven Newmaster - Genomics Professor at University of Guelph - https://www.uoguelph.ca/ib/newmaster David Juncker - Professor & Chair of the Biomedical Engineer/Genome Centre at McGill University -https://www.mcgill.ca/bbme/david-juncker Christine Neilson - CEO at Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science -https://www.csmls.org/About-Us/About-CSMLS/Staff

Liberal Throne Speech 2020
18/09/2020 Duración: 24minPUBLISHED: 19/09/2020 A Throne Speech is on the horizon for Canadians. Will it mean a new direction for the country or a trip to the ballot box? The gnashing of teeth was apparent when the Liberals pulled the plug on Parliament, proroguing until September 23rd. Opposition members accuse the Grits of ducking the investigations into the WE Scandal. The political posturing is not surprising, but the bottom line for all Canadians is finding away out of the pandemic and getting the economy on track. Prime Minister Trudeau has said he will consult with all party leaders, but whether it’s an empty gesture or a meaningful conversation, is still to be seen. One thing that is very clear despite the lack of details is the Throne Speech will come with a lot of spending. There have been overtures toward a green economy, more childcare spending, national pharmacare program and guaranteed annual income. The game of chicken comes with the confidence vote. If the Opposition parties vote against the speech, then we’re headed t

Unpublished.TV: University Students
15/09/2020 Duración: 30minPUBLISHED: 29/08/2020 University students in Canada have been back to class for at least a week - but what's changed as a result of the pandemic? Colleges and universities are shifting to more of an online model with a few options for smaller in person learning. Not all students can afford to B-Y-O-D(evice), and internet connection may be another hurdle for some. Many students saw their last semester go up in flames when the pandemic first arrived. Now, that the September semester is here, how's the lockdown recession going to affect their experience - for better or worse? ———————————— GUESTS: Gyllian Phillips - Past President of OCUFA & Associate Professor at Nipissing University in North Bay - https://www.nipissingu.ca/users/gyllian-phillips Raywat Deonandon - Professor of Epidemiology uOttawa - https://health.uottawa.ca/people/deonandan-raywat Nicole Brayiannis - National Deputy Chairperson at the Canadian Federation of Students - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicole-brayiannis-3927a011b/?originalSubdo

COVID-19: Reopening the Border
11/09/2020 Duración: 26minPUBLISHED: 09/12/2020 Polling in Canada consistently shows between 80 and 90 percent of Canadians want the Canada - US border to remain closed due to America’s lack of control over the coronavirus. How long will Canadians get their way? The longest undefended border in the world has been closed to all but essential travel since March 21st. 29 US Congress members have written the Canadian Government to start making a plan for when the border can open safely. Almost $630 billion annually is traded between the two. The fear is palpable in Canadians as they see the pandemic out of control having claimed more than 190 thousand lives. Our two economies are intertwined and with both facing stark economic futures, there are people who want to see business resume to offset the impact. While business continues to be done between the two countries, it is no where near where it was, nor helping business grow. ———————————— GUESTS: Eric Miller - President at Rideau Potomac Strategy Group - http://rideaupotomac.com/about-us
