  • Joris Teer (EUISS) on China's grip on critical raw materials – and how to break it

    22/07/2025 Duración: 57min

China is increasingly using its dominance in supplying the world’s critical raw materials as a weapon. Earlier this year, it restricted the export of heavy rare earths. Shortly after, industrial companies across the globe began to struggle. How did China become so dominant? Can Europe break free? And, if so, how? To answer these questions, I’m joined by Joris Teer, analyst at the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS).

Gigawatts of solar power could be switched off at the push of a button. To discuss the threat and how it might be addressed, I’m joined by Christoph Podewils, Secretary General of the European Solar Manufacturing Council, and Bart Groothuis, Member of the European Parliament representing the Renew Europe group.

  • Louwrens Op de Beek (Nobian) on the Necessity of Hydrogen Storage in Salt Caverns

    03/06/2025 Duración: 48min

In an energy system where wind and solar play a dominant role – the kind of system currently being developed across Europe – storage will be of critical importance. This includes, for instance, storing green hydrogen in...salt caverns. But why store hydrogen in salt caverns? And how does it actually work? To discuss this, I’m joined by Louwrens Op de Beek, Director of Energy Storage at the chemical company Nobian.

  • Jonas Sjölander (Adven) on how Energy as a Service can accelerate the energy transition

    20/05/2025 Duración: 38min

Industries can significantly accelerate their energy transition with the service my guest provide – a service that, unlike in most of Europe, has been used in Northern Europe for decades. It’s called Energy as a Service. What can the rest of Europe learn from the Nordic approach? What works, and what doesn’t? To answer these questions, I’m joined by Jonas Sjölander, the CEO of energy company Adven.

Some are calling it 'mining’s new frontier’ – deep-sea mining for critical minerals. A company at the forefront of this development, is Allseas. A global offshore energy company that owns the world's first deep-sea mineral-production vessel. How do you extract critical minerals from the ocean floor, miles below the surface? And how do you do it responsibly? To answer these questions, I'm joined by Pieter Heerema, the President of Allseas.

  • Alex Robertson (Energynest) on decarbonizing industrial heat and steam generation

    06/05/2025 Duración: 47min

With industrial heat and steam generation accounting for around 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, renewable power-to-heat solutions and thermal energy storage are essential for companies looking to decarbonize their operations. What are the main challenges? And what is the potential of current renewable heat technologies? To answer these questions I’m joined by Alex Robertson, the CEO of Norwegian company EnergyNest.

To talk about the future of mining in Europe – and the innovation needed to shape it – I'm joined by Jenny Greberg, Vice President of Technology at Swedish mining-company LKAB.

  • Mikael Nordlander (Vattenfall) on HYBRIT, the development of fossil-free steel

    15/04/2025 Duración: 49min

Call it the holy grail: producing steel without emitting greenhouse gases. In Sweden, three companies – SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall – have been working on it for years under the name HYBRITE. With a pilot plant in operation, the proof of concept has been delivered. Is the production of so-called ‘green steel’ ready for scale-up? And if not, what challenges remain? To answer these questions, I'm joined by Mikael Nordlander, Director of Partnerships at Vattenfall and one of the brains behind HYBRITE.

  • Daniel Yergin (S&P Global) on The Troubled Energy Transition

    08/04/2025 Duración: 47min

‘The Troubled Energy Transition’ is the title of a recent essay in Foreign Affairs, the influential foreign-policy magazine. Although some important progress is being made in the transition to renewables, fossil fuels are still dominating the energy system. Rather than replacing conventional energy sources, the growth of renewables is coming on top of that of the conventional ones. What has been unfolding is not so much an ‘energy transition’ as an ‘energy addition’, the authors write. So how can the world move forward? How should we move forward? And what about Europe? To answer these questions, I'm joined by someone the New York Times calls 'America's most influential energy expert'. He is a leading authority on energy, geopolitics and the global economy, a best-selling author, Pulitzer Prize-winner for his book The Prize: The Epic Quest For Oil, Money & Power. His latest book is called The New Map: Energy, Climate and the Clash of Nations. My guest In Search of Europe's Energy Future is Daniel Yergin,
