Those on Diet Drugs Drink Less
18/11/2024 Duración: 01minVidcast: https://www.instagram.com/p/DChtPvOJ9da/ Half of those using semaglutide and similar GLP-1 drugs consume fewer alcoholic beverages. This according to a study presented to the Obesity Society’s 2024 meeting. Reviewed were the records of more than 14,000 WeightWatcher’s participants who were using the diet drugs for as long as 9 months. The data showed that 45% of those using the drugs decreased their use of alcohol, 52% had no change in drinking habits, and 2% increased their alcohol use. Those who were drinking the most at baseline were most likely to stop drinking. Diet drug users report a reduced craving for alcoholic drinks but also more severe side effects including hangovers and gastric distress if they did drink. This adds yet another benefit of GLP-1 drugs to the list already lengthening. Whether these diet drugs can help treat alcoholism remains to be proven. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/do-patients-anti-obesity-drugs-decrease-alcohol-use-2024a1000kf9 #diet #glp1 #semagl

More Long CoVid Than We Thought
18/11/2024 Duración: 01minVidcast: https://www.instagram.com/p/DChsez0tRa4/ Using AI, Harvard investigators now suggest that the prevalence of Long CoVid is 3-fold higher than once thought. A Mass General Brigham medical informatics study just published in the journal Cell reviewed data from over 295,000 Massachusetts patients. The data revealed a Long CoVid prevalence of 23%. Previous estimates pegged that prevalence at around 7%. The use of AI permitted a rapid and accurate record review eliminating other conditions that clouded an accurate diagnosis. This new information underscores the need to avoid contracting CoVid. If you haven’t already, do obtain the latest CoVid vaccine and plan to be re-vaccinated 2 to 3 times a year depending upon your age and other medical issues. https://www.cell.com/med/fulltext/S2666-6340(24)00407-0 #CoVid #longcovid #ai #vaccine

Energize Cancer Killing T cells By Neutralizing Tumor Waste
18/11/2024 Duración: 01minVidcast: https://www.instagram.com/p/DChra0zuq0F/ Immunotherapy could help T lymphocytes eradicate cancer cells not only by boosting their immune reactivity but also by eliminating the cancer cell waste products that that make these killer cells sleepy. So report University of Pittsburgh immunologists in the journal Nature Immunology. As cancer cells grow and multiply, they release the metabolic product lactic acid. When this byproduct contacts killer T cells, it saps them of the energy they need to effectively cripple and kill cancer cells. Lactic acid requires a transport protein MCT11 to enter T cells. Blocking MCT11 activity keeps lactic acid out of the white cells and allows them to more effectively fight the cancer at least in mice. If blocking this lactic acid transporter turns out to energize human T cells in their fight against cancer, we may see it deployed in the battle against human cancer….. someday soon. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41590-024-01999-3 #tcells #killercells #lacticac

Dozing While Breastfeeding Is Common and Dangerous
18/11/2024 Duración: 01minVidcast: https://www.instagram.com/p/DChqofdMImw/ More than 1 in 4 new mothers fall asleep while breastfeeding their newborns. Doing so increases the risk of SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, nearly 67 times. University of Virginia Family Medicine researchers report these worrisome findings in the journal Pediatrics after studying 1259 mothers. New mothers breastfeeding in bed were twice as likely to fall asleep as those feeding baby in a chair. Breastfeeding is highly recommended as it benefits both baby and mother in so many ways. For baby, it improves nutrition, immunity, and general development. For mom it helps with post-delivery weight loss, reduces depression, lowers breast and ovarian cancer risks, and saves money. Do breastfeed but do so safely and AWAKE. https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article-abstract/doi/10.1542/peds.2024-066072/199817/Mothers-Falling-Asleep-During-Infant-Feeding?redirectedFrom=fulltext?autologincheck=redirected #breastfeeding #dozing #SIDS #chair #bed
