  • Concern Over Spreading Algal Bloom In East Clare

    Concern has been expressed in East Clare over the growing presence of an algal bloom on the shores of Lough Derg. The pea-green scum like build up can cause skin and eye irritation, gastro-intestinal illness and nausea, and can be lethal for animals, especially dogs. The algae was first identified at Ballycuggeran and Mountshannon as these areas are regularly utilised for swimming, however it's understood prevailing winds have carried it up to parts of Meelick Bay. Whitegate Fine Gael Councillor Pat Burke has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan it's vital people stay away from the affected areas.

    Family and friends of 12-year-old Layla Kelly, who has been courageously battling a serious illness since 2023, are coming together to take on a Cycle from Kilnaboy National School all the way to Croagh Patrick in Co. Mayo to raise vital funds for Layla’s treatments, medications, and future care. The Cycle will take place this Saturday, (27th September), followed by a group climb of Croagh Patrick the next morning, (Sunday, 28th September).   • Shannon Companies Included In €6M Funding Pool For Groundbreaking Projects

    Two Shannon companies have been included in a multi-million euro scheme aiming to advance groundbreaking medical technology. Smart Electronics Ltd is among three organisations allocated a combined pool of €2.1m to develop a world first sensory system for treating stroke-related gait impairments. While PBC BioMed is included in a fund worth €3.9m, that will aim to improve outcomes for gastrointestinal surgeries. PBC BioMed's Chief Science Officer Dr Gerard Insley says their work will make a huge difference for patients.

  • Government Says HIQA Review Examining Case For New Midwest ED To Be Published "Very Shortly"

    The final report of the HIQA review examining the case for a new emergency department in the Midwest is expected to be published "very shortly". The review into urgent and emergency care capacity in this region was announced by former Health Minister Stephen Donnelly in May 2024. The findings of the review were initially due to be published in May of this year but this was pushed back to September. Six days out from the close of the month, Fine Gael Minister of State John Cummins says the demand and capacity projections being prepared by the ESRI are crucial to the process.

  • Shannon And Ennis Urged To Diversify To Tackle Commercial Vacancy

    It's been suggested growth must be seen in the retail sector of Shannon and the services offering of Ennis if both towns are to tackle their commercial vacancy problem. The latest quarterly report from GeoDirectory has found that Shannon has the second-highest commercial vacancy rate in the country at 30.8% while Ennis has the ninth-highest in Munster at 19.1%. The data reveals just over 18% of Shannon's commercial units are retail which is below the average of 22%, while Ennis is below the national norm when it comes to the services sector. GeoDirectory CEO Dara Keogh has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons both towns must diversify to bring life back into premises currently lying idle.
