First 2024, MNP Consumer Debt Index released and Canadians' current debt perceptions reaches all-time low. 63% of Canadians concerned about their ability to repay their debts. - 47% regret the amount of debt they've taken on. FINANCES: taking a toll on mental health: 60% of Canadians say their financial situation causes them anxiety, stress (59%), isolation (48%), embarrassment (40%). - 26% making only minimum payments on credit card, minimum payments on lines of credit (19%), 18% say they took from savings, home equity, RSP or alternative methods to pay debt or day-to-day expenses in the last year. National focus this week on a crime incident in Peterborough, Ontario. At a convenience store a 22 year old clerk was helping a customer when a male with a baseball bat entered the store, allegedly demanding cash and striking the clerk with the bat. A fight ensued and the clerk grabbed the baseball bat, chased the would-be robber outside the store and allegedly proceeded to hit the man several times with the bat. The robber was taken to hospital for treatment while the clerk was treated by EMS at the site. - Police then laid an aggravated assault criminal charge against the 22 year old store clerk. Response was immediate with hundreds of Peterborough residents and others challenging the police decision saying the clerk had acted in self defence, prompting the Peterborough chief of police to take to 'X' and defend his officers and the laying of the charge. The RCMP by its own admission this week failed to meet its own deadline of December 31, 2023, to implement the 130 recommendations from the Mass Casualty Commission following Canada's worst mass-shooting incident his nation's history, April 18, 2020, in Nova Scotia.  Now the RCMP is saying only "we'll release the implementation details as soon as possible."
