Every week Richard and Linda talk about parenting or family life in one way or another, and this week they look back at the first family and first marriage that lore or religion have as an example. The story of Adam and Eve is a lesson in companionship. The Eyres also share examples from literature that support the idea that working together helps us know ourselves.

Richard and Linda talk about their ongoing speaking and child visiting trip around the world. Today they focus on the latter part and seeing their grown children that have settled all over. Communication dynamics change as families grow so the Eyres give some tips for communicating with children that have grown and had families of their own.

Richard and Linda talk to us today from Dubai, in the middle of their around the world speaking (and kids visiting) tour. It is an amazing opportunity to see how parenting is treated in cultures different to our own. The core advice that they give to an American or Christian audience is surprisingly similar to how they structure their speaking to an Asian or Muslim audience. There are many different family dynamics in the world and each family picks the style that works for them. For one of Richard and Linda's kids the style is to stay at home with the young kids now, when his peers are working, and then go to work hard later in life, when his peers are retiring. There are many different parenting styles and so the key is finding out what will be the best for your family.

The Eyres subscribe to the idea that the best thing you can do for your children is to love your spouse. The strength of your relationship is going to have a positive effect on the strength of your parenting. No matter what each parent's responsibilities are outside the home, they need to present a united front to the kids. Richard and Linda also discuss how separated parents can still work together for the kids.

Whether it's a country or a family, every institution needs a few things to operate. Some of the most important of these are Laws, Economy, and Traditions. Most families do these to some extent, having house rules, an allowance, and rituals or patterns; but Richard and Linda today encourage you to write them down. Make it clear to the whole family how these things will work and everyone will understand them better.

We all live in a diverse world and that means kids can be exposed to all sorts of different cultures. We all know that sometimes kids are the best at just saying the first thing that comes to their heads, so how can we better teach them to be respectful and tolerant of people that look or act different from the way they do. Richard and Linda talk today about that and how kids are actually much better at being colorblind than we might think.

Richard and Linda have had a blast being grandparents, and it's a totally different dynamic than it was when they were parents. Grandpas and Grandmas can bring special things to the table that are separate from each other and the Eyres share some of their insights on that today. There are many different strategies to deal with technology. Richard and Linda this week talk about how to introduce kids to good technologies and teach them moderation in all the others. Children are being inundated with screens and social media at a younger and younger age. Most usage can be harmless, but technology is just another area of your family's life where you want to be engaged and know what is going on, so you can know if a problem arises.

As you set goals for the new year be sure not to forget the goals related to your spouse. There is a pressing refugee situation in the world right now and Richard and Linda have used this season of good will to teach their family about service and love. Now that Thanksgiving is over the Eyres take this week to reflect on that amazing holiday and turn their eyes to the holiday the stores have been looking forward to since the end of Halloween, Christmas. It can be the most wonderful time of the year, but sometimes the corporate, consumerism, commercialism of it all can weigh us down. Richard and Linda provide tips for us all to remember why we love this holiday so much and how great it truly can be.

Today the Eyres focus on some of the common mistakes they've seen in parenting. They make it simple and line out three things to stop and then in turn start in parenting. First they suggest stopping the entitlement attitudes by starting a family economy. Making children responsible for their own finances even in a small way can start them thinking about money in a self-reliant way. The next thing to stop is psudo-discipline by starting a family legal system. When rules of the house are made together as a family instead of handed down from the parents, then everyone will understand why they are there and what the recourse will be. Finally they suggest parents stop fearing outside cultures and start a family culture. Make it clear the kinds of things that your family is all about and that the main sourse of teaching comes in the home and not outside cultures of media, politics, or peers.

The Eyres try to expand our view of what art is this week. Having art in your home isn't as simple as hanging up some pictures. In fact, they suggest you consider the benefits that come to children and the whole atmosphere of your home when you add art, getting out to art events in the community, and make a conscious decision of what specific art you want to feature in your home. As schools focus more and more on math and science, the art education you provide in your home becomes invaluable.
