Eyres On The Road

Richard and Linda are spending a lot of their time and effort these days on grandparenting and forming parent/grandparenting teams to more effectively teach and raise children. The interest has proven to be so huge that they are creating a 6-month course called Grandparenting 101. On today's show they go through the syllabus for that course and invite listeners to write to EyresGrandparenting101@gmail to get on the invitation list.

On today's episode, Richard and Linda unveil the new "take" on gratitude and challenge us to write one handwritten thank-you note each week and to write one "happy" and one "sad" each day in our gratitude journals. They discuss how the art of graceful and grateful receiving can transform our lives and the lives of others. One metaphor is that no matter how perfect a pass the quarterback throws, it is not complete until the receiver gathers it in.

The Eyre's are casting today from the Island of Mallorca off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean. They are there with their son Talmadge, working on their forthcoming book THREE-LETTER LESSONS, which presents 20 "word pegs" to help refine and improve our attitudes and our characters. Most people today work and plan harder on what they are DOING than on who they are BECOMING. The word pegs of the three-letter lessons can change that balance.

On today's episode, the Eyre's continue with their mini-series on short, three letter words or abbreviations that can set our priorities and attitudes for life. The tenth three letter lesson is FAM, or the ultimate priority of our families in the broadest extended sense that includes cousins, uncles, aunts, parents--everyone to whom we are blood related. Learning to love and serve and forgive and mend fences within this "inner" of life is the key to everything.

Today the Eyre's talk about the importance and joy of three generation families where parents and grandparents team up to make life good for kids. Richard and Linda are developing a how-to skills course for Grandparents, and today they reveal the results of a survey of grandparents needs. On the first episode of each month, Richard and Linda discuss a new twist on making gratitude journals more meaningful and effective. Today's show is dramatic, in that it suggests that we make a shift during April from "thanking" to "asking." Listen in as the Eyre's elaborate on the tremendous power and clarity that can result from the right question at the right time--particularly a question to God.

On today's show, the Eyre's continue their series on "three-letter lessons"--little word-pegs that represent touchstones or concepts to live by. The word LOW may initially have a negative connotation, but think of it as a representation of humility, of the joyful acknowledgement of our own vulnerability and "nothingness" contrasted with the glory and "everythingness" of God. This replaces self-confidence with faith and leads to calmness and peace (and even to lower blood pressure!)

Continuing with their series on "Three-Letter Lessons," the Eyre's talk today about the concept, the attitude, and the paradigm of FLO--of getting into the mental "zone" where things happen naturally and calmly and fall into sync with the realities of the day. Discussing methods like meditation, breathing, and music, Richard and Linda discuss the internal ways of feeling FLO, and then turn to the more spiritual approach of prayer and asking for God's Spirit to bring the FLO.

The discussion is about taking grandparenting to a new, higher level, and becoming the "trunk" that links your roots with your branches. The spiritual part is understanding that our grandkids are actually our brothers and sisters, and that we can get help and inspiration from the real Father.

As always on their first podcast of the month, Richard and Linda discuss the connections between gratitude and character and propose that "the deliberate effort to see through a gratitude lens makes bad people good and good people better." They quote Cicero who said "Gratitude is the greatest of virtues, in fact, the parent of all other virtues." The Eyre's then present the Gratitude challenge for March which is to thank someone personally each day and record it in our gratitude journals.

As listeners know by now, three-letter lessons are simple paradigm shifts where one small word or acronym reminds us of a concept or attitude we want to incorporate into daily life. Today's lesson is JOY, and how it differs from happiness, how it can be a choice we make, and what capacities we need to develop to experience more of it. Joy exists, every day, wherever we are and irrespective of our problems or sorrow. It is a question of recognizing it and finding it.

Most people believe in some form of a Higher Power, and whether or not they call that power God, most believe there are ways to "tap in" to something brighter and clearer and deeper than themselves. On today's episode, the Eyre's make the word TAP the sixth installment in their "Three Letter Lessons" and suggest that it is also an acronym with the T standing for the tools we need, the A for the attitudes we can develop, and the P for the prayer that empowers us.

On today's episode, Richard and Linda talk about inter-generational families and the connections between children, parents, and grandparents. These relationships can be so rich and rewarding if we make the deliberate effort to be the best parents and grandparents we can be. In this podcast, Richard and Linda begin with a new article they are publishing this week on division and unity--within the world, the country, and the Church, concluding that what unites us is much more than what divides us. They they go on (as on the first show of each month) to the February Gratitude challenge which is to discover one new thing to love each day and to write it in your gratitude journal starting with the words "Today, I love...."

On this episode the Eyre's explore the self-examining and stress-reducing principle of "YET" which can turn discouragement into hope and allow for Spirit-initiated corrections and adjustments in our lives. I'm not a good parent...YET, I don't study scripture regularly...YET, I haven't found my life's passion...YET. Applied in the right way the YET concept can lead us to a new level of prayer about God's agenda for us and remind us of how long is eternity.

On today's show, Richard and Linda shift back into their ongoing series on "Three-letter-lessons" and talk about the concept of ASK. The most frequently repeated admonition in scripture is to ASK. And the admonition is often followed by the promise "and ye shall receive." God needs us to ask so he can bless us without violating our agency. The Eyre's then go on to discuss the value of good questions in all relationships and how to teach children to be good question ask-ers.

The Eyre's cast today from Kauai where they are having some meetings about promoting more proactive Grandparenting and setting up a speaking schedule to reach the growing number of Grandparents who want to take a more effective and difference-making position with regard to their living legacy grandchildren. On today's show, Richard and Linda explore the topic from the parent's vantage point as well as the grandparents.

On Maui for a few weeks trying to finish some writing projects, Richard and Linda discuss the drama of the change of shoveling snow to gathering fallen avocados. And then they get into the "speed of going slow" that can happen to us when we breathe a little deeper and move a bit slower--letting our awareness and perspective and the Spirit flow into us and calm us and those around us (even our rambunctious children.)

From snowed-in Park City, the Eyre's begin the new year with some challenges. First, they challenge us to band together as parents and grandparents in three-generation families that work in harmony to make life better for our children. Second they challenge us to each have a one word slogan or motto for 2022. And third they give us a new slant on what to capture during January in our daily gratitude journals.

In this special Christmas edition of Eyre's on the Road, the Eyre's discuss Jesus Christ from the vantage point of the ROLES that He played and plays in the drama of eternity. Christ plays every key role, and there are 20 of them. As we learn to see Christ as the key to everything, including our own families, our own happiness, and our own exaltation, we begin to realize that He is the indefensible MEANS to all good ENDS.
