The aim now is to keep any temperature increase below 1.5 degrees, and predicting a massive $54 trillion impact on world economies according to Moody’s. On the Unpublished Cafe today we will hear from two parties about their climate change platform. The Federal New Democrats have taken the wraps off their plan which touts the creation of 300 thousand new jobs with a focus on clean energy. Mission Possible, the Green Climate Action Plan. It’s a 20-point plan that boosts greenhouse gas reduction more than any party in Canada as well as transitioning towards a clean energy economy. • Canada's Plastic Ban

    23/06/2019 Duración: 24min

PUBLISHED: 06/23/2019 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: Up to 95 per cent of all plastic found in the world’s oceans comes from just 10 source rivers, which are all in the developing world. Single-use items: plastic bags, straws, cutlery, plates, stir sticks, takeout packaging, cups, and cigarette butts. The proposed Liberal plan would kick off in 2021 —curbing litter and also cutting nearly 2 million tons of carbon pollution. They claim the policy would also stimulate the economy by creating 42,000 jobs. Single use plastic items are in the crosshairs of the federal government with a proposed ban to be in place by 2021. While plastics appears to be the environmental boogeyman, will it result in tangible benefits? Prime Minister Trudeau made the policy announcement earlier this month. Environmental groups applauded the move while the Cons saw it as a distraction from the issues that have been dragging down the Liberals. This is far from new in the Western world. Who hasn’t seen those plastic bags snagged

  • The Green Wave

    09/06/2019 Duración: 26min

PUBLISHED: 06/09/2019 Is a Green Wave about to wash over Canada ahead of the next federal election? A new Abacus Data poll shows the federal Greens with 12% support for the party that has tried to crack double digit support forever in Canada. Digging deeper in the numbers, more than one third of voters say they would consider voting Green. It’s not the first time the Greens were seen to be on the cusp of a break through, but it always seemed stymied by strategic voting. There’s still plenty of race track before we go to the polls, but it’s certainly wind in the sails of the Green Party’s morale. At the provincial level, the Greens have seen victories, electing their first MPP to the Ontario legislature, and The Green Party is the Official Opposition in P.E.I. and it holds the balance of power in BC. There certainly seems to be momentum for the Greens, but can they keep it going?  ———————————— https://www.unpublished.vote/issue/444/is-a-green-wave-hitting-canada ———————————— GUESTS: Nelson Wiseman https://poli

  • Is Democracy Under Siege?

    11/05/2019 Duración: 14min

PUBLISHED: 05/12/2019 Samara Canada recently published a study revealing that almost two-thirds of Canadians feel alienated by the politicians who they voted to represent them. Even economists agree; democracy is slipping. What can be done to get democracy back on track? The ability to sway public opinion is becoming increasingly simplistic in the age of globalization and social media. Disinformation from online data is causing people to adopt a sense of hopelessness, which ultimately sways elections. A perfect example of this phenomena is the strategy used in the Brexit 'Vote Leave' campaign and the scandal surrounding Cambridge Analytica's use of data. It's only a matter of time until Canada's experiences these kind of destabilization tactics. On this episode of The Unpublished Cafe, Ed Hand sits down with James O'Grady to talk about the evolution of Unpublished Media, and how he hopes he can empower Canadians so they can influence the political decision-making process. ———————————— https://www.unpublished.

  • SNC-Lavalin 3.0

    14/04/2019 Duración: 36min

PUBLISHED: 04/14/2019 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: Justin Trudeau is scrambling to save his brand and support as two prominent members of his cabinet are turfed. The Opposition Conservatives constantly badger the Liberals and in particular the Prime Minister, going as far as goading him into a lawsuit. Canadians are watching this issue despite the ferocious effort by the Liberals to change the channel. Depending on where you sit on the political spectrum, you would either think Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott were not team players by letting the cat out of the bag, or they were “whistleblowers”, as they iterate, “speaking truth to power”. An interesting angle on this whole affair is that it could bring Canada a whole new constitutional moment ———————————— https://www.unpublished.vote/issue/340/the-legal-implications-of-the-snc-lavalin-controversy ———————————— GUESTS: Allan Cutler http://acacanada.ca/tag/allan-cutler/ Founder of Anti-Corruption and Accountability Canada, and whistler blower of

  • Maxime Bernier

    31/03/2019 Duración: 18min

PUBLISHED: 03/31/2019 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: The explosive story of political meddling in a judicial decision was just the tip of the iceberg. Since the story broke, it’s become much more than just a “he said-she said” dispute. There’s been calls for the PM to step down, the call for a public inquiry and even a police investigation. For the Liberals, blood is in the pool and the sharks are circling. As mentioned this scandal keeps fanning the flames of discontent. Now we have a damning audio recording between Jody Wilson Raybould and Canada’s Top public servant, Michael Wernick in which a deferred prosecution agreement is discussed for SNC-LAVALIN . That takes the story in a whole new ethical and legal direction. Here on the Unpublished Cafe, we will endeavor to bring you the leaders of the federal parties for their perspective. As for SNC-LAVALIN, it estimates it’s lost $5 billion in potential business since the scandal broke and it’s competitors are using the scandal to their benefit. ——————

  • The Legal Implications Surrounding the SNC-Lavalin Controversy

    17/03/2019 Duración: 40min

———————————— PUBLISHED: 03/17/2019 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: Sunny Ways has given in to gloomy days for the federal Liberals after former Attorney General, Jody Wilson Raybould blew the whistle on the PMO for trying to pressure her into giving SNC-LAVALIN a Deferred Prosecution Agreement for it’s plying the Gadhafi regime with millions of dollars to secure infrastructure contracts in the North African country. It all came to light during the Arab Spring when several Middle East nations faced uprisings, including in Libya. For its part, SNC-LAVALIN faces charges and a possible conviction could mean the company would be barred from bidding on federal government contracts for 10 years which would be a serious blow to its bottom line. Its share prices have tumbled since the federal court rejected the company’s request for a remediation agreement. SNC-LAVALIN has maintained it should get a DPA because the people responsible for the fraud and bribery are gone, there is new leadership and some new board

  • DeepFake and the War on Truth 2.0

    10/02/2019 Duración: 25min

PUBLISHED: 02/10/2019 Seeing is believing when it comes to the truth. What happens when what you see looks real, convincingly real, but isn't? Earlier this week, Canada's Chief Electoral Officer, Stephane Perrault told House of Commons Committee, that there is very little in his tool box to deal with "fake news" about candidates or their parties during an election. Outright lies on social media about those seeking office can't be regulated by Elections Canada. We've all seen those hatchet jobs on candidates which turn their electoral dreams into nightmares. Now imagine we ratchet that up a few notches to the point where someone creates a realistic video of that candidate in say a compromising position? Perhaps infidelity or criminal actions. But, the key is; it never happened. Welcome to the War on Truth 2.0 and it's all driven by sophisticated technology. This is what's known as "DeepFake". Video technology that can create video of you so realistic, that it's difficult to differentiate

  • Gazing Through Canada's Crystal Ball 2019

    25/01/2019 Duración: 33min

PUBLISHED: 01/11/2019 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: As the calendar turns to 2019, Canadians are looking down the road to see what is coming over the horizon. For some Canadians, the view is a little foreboding. While the pundits and pollsters have a different view as to what 2019 will bring, the one common thread through their work is that Canadians are probably the most cynical they've ever been. While 2018 gave us tariffs, Trans Mountain and late night Twitter tirades of Trump, 2019 is shaping up to be an even nastier version of last year. As we start to navigate through 2019, here on the Unpublished Cafe, we are looking ahead at the benchmarks facing this country....and in an election year at that. It is safe to say the federal election appears to be the defining moment of 2019. But there's plenty of racetrack left before the polls on October 21st. ———————————— https://www.unpublished.vote/issue/271/gazing-through-canadas-crystal-ball-2019 ———————————— GUESTS: Darrel Bricker http://www.publicaffa

  • Maxime Bernier

    27/09/2018 Duración: 39min

PUBLISHED: 09/27/2018 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: In late August, after a federal Conservative leadership race and rumblings of unhappiness and just ahead of the Conservative policy convention, MP Maxime Bernier announced he was leaving the Federal Cons to form his own party. Some felt it was selfish while others said it was a breath of fresh air for like minded Tories. Bernier was a razor close second to Andrew Scheer in the Conservative leadership race, which could be interpreted as "sour grapes", but highlights a bigger issue. The divide in the Cons Party. Just one percent separated Scheer and Bernier. Now, those on the right side of the spectrum feel Bernier's move may split the vote and hand the next election to the Liberals. The new party launched by Bernier is the People's Choice Party of Canada and the man behind it, Maxime Bernier joins us. ———————————— https://www.unpublished.vote/issue/170/bernier-peoples-party-of-canada ———————————— GUESTS: Maxime Bernier https://www.maximeber

  • Notwithstanding

    12/09/2018 Duración: 37min

Q: When are Your Charter protected rights not protected? A: When Section 33 of the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms—the Notwithstanding Clause—is invoked. ———————————— PUBLISHED: 09/12/2018 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: This week, the Ontario Government announced it would be using the “Notwithstanding Clause” for the first time in its history. The Notwithstanding clause allows the government to circumvent a court decision, which found the Ontario government violated the Charter when it decided to pass Bill 5 earlier this summer. Bill 5 reduced the size of Toronto City Council from 47 to 25 members. It’s a subject the Conservatives never raised during Ontario’s June election. Detractors say this is a personal vendetta by Ford against Toronto Council. While the Tories maintain this is a constitutional way to get what they want because the clause is included in the Charter. While this is happening now in Ontario, some experts feel it could be used elsewhere across the country by other Premiers.

  • Saudi Arabia

    22/08/2018 Duración: 28min

It was a tweet that was heard half a world away and diplomatic relationships between Canada and Saudi Arabia are now hanging by a thread. ———————————— PUBLISHED: 08/22/2018 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: Diplomatic tension is on the rise between the two countries after Canada's Global Affairs Ministry tweeted at the Saudi government, condemning the arrest of two female bloggers who have been critical of the regime. Since the tweet "heard round the world", Saudi Arabia has kicked out Canada's diplomat, pulled 15 thousand students out of Canadian universities, suspended flights between the two countries and ordered it's central bank to sell any Canadian investments it has despite the loss. But can we be that bad if Saudi Arabia, in it's huff, will still sell more than 100 000 barrels of oil a day? Saudi oil is refined on the east coast and is the primary source for fuel in Quebec and Atlantic Canada. ———————————— https://www.unpublished.vote/issue/141/saudi-canada-relations ———————————— GUEST

  • Toronto City Council

    08/08/2018 Duración: 34min

Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: Is democracy under attack in Canada's largest city?    Ontario's new government has turned upside down the upcoming Municipal Election in Toronto by announcing legislation to reduce the size of Toronto City Council from 47 this fall, to 25. As well, the Province is suspending the upcoming election of Regional Chairs in Peel, York and Muskoka riding (former OPC Leader Patrick Brown’s riding). Under the BNA Act of 1867, provinces have the power to make these changes.  Municipalities are creatures of the Province . The Ontario gov't feels this move will save taxpayers about $25 million over four years although there is scant evidence to support that.  Abacus Data conducted a survey of Toronto residents and found almost seven in 10 think the idea should be scrapped or postponed until the next election. While there is little the federal government can do, there is a growing chorus of outrage about what is happening in Toronto.

  • Canadian Foreign Policy in the Trump-Putin Era

    25/07/2018 Duración: 33min

Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast:Canada and Russia have had far from warm relations. There have been pockets of cooperation, but for the most part there appears to be little trust between the two sides. It was Canada and Jean Chretien that brought Russia to the G7 making it the G8 with Boris Yeltsin in charge. It appeared then that Russia was easing the iron grip it had on it's people. Under Vladimir Putin, it looks like Russia is heading down an old path. The poisoning of a Russian spy and his daughter on British soil has West giving Russia the cold shoulder. So far more than 25 nations have turfed Russian diplomats from their embassies and Russia has countered the same. The wild card in the whole game is US President Trump. He has said he could have good relations with Putin and Russia and then he will counter the assertion. • Ontario Throne Speech

    18/07/2018 Duración: 25min

Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: The Ontario PC's made a lot of promises on the campaign trail but we're short on details when it came to attaining goals. Promises of lower Hydro bills and lower gas prices were highlighted but they haven't been fleshed out yet. The Province has pulled out of cap and trade although there is nothing to replace it. Ford has made good on turfing Hydro One head, Mayo Schmidt, who he dubbed the "six million dollar man" during the campaign. The entire Board resigned leaving the utility without leadership. One of the most polarizing issue during the campaign was a return to the previous sex-ed curriculum which is 20 years old and out of date. New Ontario education minister, Lisa Thompson was invited on to the show, but her office said she was unavailable. And that's too bad as their seems to be some confusion as to what will be taught. In the last 48 hours, the PC's have said the old curriculum will be taught in September, then Thompson added that things like c

  • Bill C-69

    11/07/2018 Duración: 34min

Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: The Liberals have staked a claim on the environment turning the Ministry of the Environment to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. And that Minister, Ottawa Centre MP, Catherine McKenna is now shepherding in Bill C69, the Impact Assessment Act and the Canadian Energy Regulator Act, to amend the Navigation Protection Act. It would replace, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 which was brought in by the Conservatives. At the time, many felt the government of the day was turning it's back on the environment and science in favour of economics. Flash forward to February of this year and the Liberals introduced Bill C 69. It has been contentious at Committee with one member resigning in protest of the Liberals heavy handed tactics. The Liberals promised to make the legislation more robust and transparent, yet there is plenty of opaqueness. The resource sector, mining and oil feel the legislation goes too far and suggests it will put a squeeze on new pr
