  • COVID-19: Despair & Mental Health

    05/05/2020 Duración: 13min

PUBLISHED: 05/05/2020 We’re living in trying times these days as the COVID-19 pandemic turns our world upside down. Will it ever be the same again? We’re just past the seven week mark when Canada went into lockdown as the COVID-19 virus spread throughout Canada. Being sequestered in your home, possibly self isolating from your family can have a huge toll on your mental wellbeing. The economic devastation from shutting down the economy will be felt long term. All are weighing on our collective mental health. In spite of all this, we are curious to hear what you think. How long do you think is necessary until we can safely open up the economy again? ———————————— GUESTS: Frank Graves – Founder of Ekos Research Associates http://www.ekospolitics.com/index.php/category/special-interest/commentary-by-frank-graves/ ———————————— REFERENCES: http://www.ekospolitics.com/index.php/2020/03/covid-19-produces-pervasive-and-strong-anxiety/ https://vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/douglas-todd-weighing-deaths-from-covid-1

  • COVID-19: Re-Opening The Economy

    02/05/2020 Duración: 28min

PUBLISHED: 05/02/2020 The door appears to be opening a crack for Canada’s provinces when it comes to restarting the economy. Over seven weeks of lockdowns for Canadians due to the pandemic, Premiers from across the country for the most part are releasing plans to ease Emergency restrictions and opening up parts of their economy. In Ontario, there is a three-staged plan, but it’s short on dates. In Quebec, it’s a bit more open with the addition of children returning to school. In Saskatchewan, the plan will start with the resumption of elective surgeries, cancelled during the pandemic. In New Brunswick, restrictions started easing last week. Opening up the economy is crucial for Canada to return to normal or at least the “new normal”. The guide to re opening the economies appears to be gradual opposed to widespread. The bottom line in all the plans is to ease into it to avoid another flare up of the pandemic.  Coming up on the Unpublished Cafe, we take a look at the plans and get some analysis from the busines

  • COVID-19: Public Mood in Canada

    29/04/2020 Duración: 24min

PUBLISHED: 04/27/2020 When it comes to “flattening” the worry curve, Canadians aren’t immune to their state of mind being impacted by the pandemic. It’s been about six weeks since the country was effectively locked down as COVID-19 spread across the country. We’ve been in emergency situations before, such as the Ice Storm, wildfires out west, the floods in Alberta. But this goes coast to coast with an enemy you really can’t see. Unlike the financial crash of 08, there is no virus spreading without a vaccine. Canadian small business owners are scrambling to keep afloat. While small businesses struggle, there is one group working AND getting a pay hike. Members of Parliament. • COVID-19: Food Security

    26/04/2020 Duración: 28min

PUBLISHED: 04/25/2020 Is Canada’s food supply at a tipping point? Agriculture and food production are essential services in our COVID-19 world, but this is a key time for the industries to ensure we have enough on the table. We now see limits on how much you can purchase at the grocery store, that is if you can find what you need. There are even hurdles are facing those wanting to get crops into the ground. Food can be a big hurdle for living pay cheque to pay cheque who may rely on the services of a food bank. One source of healthy food, farmers markets, are looking at new ways to do business. Farmers for the most part keep an eye on the sky as the weather pretty well dictates what and when. Now, there’s the pandemic wild card in the deck. ———————————— GUESTS: Keith Currie – President of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture https://ofa.on.ca/about-ofa/board-of-directors/keith-currie/ Kirsten Beardsley - Chief Network Services Officer at Food Banks Canada https://www.linkedin.com/in/kirstin-beardsley-90737b1

  • COVID-19: China's Cover-Up

    23/04/2020 Duración: 13min

PUBLISHED: 04/23/2020 Here we are a month into the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada and voices are starting to rise when it comes to pointing the finger of blame. Earlier this week, former federal Justice Minister, Irwin Cotler penned a column calling for sanctions on China for not being honest with the World Health Organization and the rest of the globe about the pandemic that was sweeping through Wuhan. When it comes to dealing with a pandemic, time matters and China has been accused of not coming clean until it was too late. Other countries have also glanced in China’s direction as well as the WHO. Is the Chinese government responsible or at least negligent? Tell us whether you think there should be sanctions enforced on China following their mismanagement of the pandemic on Unpublished.Vote ———————————— GUESTS: Emily de La Bruyère - Co-founder of Horizon Advisory https://www.horizonadvisory.org/team ———————————— REFERENCES: https://nationalpost.com/news/its-possible-a-wuhan-disease-lab-is-the-focus-of-suspicio

  • COVID-19: Social Distancing

    21/04/2020 Duración: 24min

PUBLISHED: 04/21/2020 Strolling down the sidewalk has never been so complicated since we entered the physical distancing world of COVID-19. Canada has been locked down for about a month now as the country grapples with the pandemic. We are told to stay home except for essentials, yet many would like to get out for some fresh air, and a little exercise. The problem is if you live in a densely populated area like downtown, there isn’t enough room for people to physical distance in such close quarters. Cities have been patchwork in their approach to offering more by closing some streets to cars so pedestrians have more room. While Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver have closed roads for pedestrians to have more room, Ottawa has been reluctant to do so. It seems municipalities across the country are wrestling with how to approach the closure of roads with some leading, others following and then others not doing anything at all. ———————————— GUESTS: Sarah Hoyles - Executive Director of Paths for People https://pathsf

  • COVID-19: Seniors in Long-term Care

    18/04/2020 Duración: 24min

PUBLISHED: 04/18/2020 Grim numbers from Canada’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. Over half of the COVID-19 deaths in Canada have been in long-term care and senior homes. The pain is palpable for this with family and friends in long-term care. The fatalities keep mounting of seniors suffering from COVID-19, putting in the spotlight several care institutions across Canada. The mounting numbers have Ontario focused on facilities like Almonte County Haven, West of Ottawa, or Pinecrest nursing home in Bobcaygeon, west of Peterborough. Rules have been amended provincially to help those who work, and live in these facilities. Today on the Unpublished.Cafe, we talk about what’s needed to take better care of our seniors during this pandemic. Do you feel the working conditions need to be improved for those working in long-term care homes? ———————————— GUESTS Charlene Nero - Member of the Decent Health and Wage Network https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlene-nero-6b83819/?originalSubdomain=ca Laura Tamblyn Watts – CEO of

  • COVID-19: Canada's Response

    11/04/2020 Duración: 14min

PUBLISHED: 04/14/2020 The picture of Canada’s response to the Covid 19 pandemic is coming into focus...and it’s not pretty. Earlier this week, The House of Commons Health Committee received documents and emails, compiled from the Ministries of Health, Transport, National Defence, Public Safety and Foreign Affairs. The pages show a fluid challenge for Canada as it appeared the federal government would change tack several times as it wrestled with the incoming Covid 19 pandemic. This highlights two glaring shortfalls in Canada’s Emergency Preparedness. First, better health surveillance to get a clearer picture of whatever emergency is heading our way. Second is proper use the National Emergency Strategic Stockpile. Tom Korski is the managing editor of Blacklock’s Reporter, which first brought these details to light and he joins on today’s issue of the Unpublished Café. ———————————— GUESTS: Tom Korski Managing Editor at Blacklock’s Reporter https://www.blacklocks.ca/about-us/ ———————————— REFERENCES: https://www

  • COVID-19: Low Risk Offenders

    11/04/2020 Duración: 29min

PUBLISHED: 04/11/2020 In our new social isolation, physical distancing world, there is a group of people for whom that isn’t a reality. A group of leading medical professionals called on the federal and provincial governments to look at releasing low risk inmates to ease the burden on those facilities. They are ripe for an outbreak when you consider the close proximity of prisoners, guards, staff and parole officers. Quite often sanitation is sparse. There’s another group to consider as well. Those being held for bail. Remember, they have yet to be convicted of a crime, nor have been before a judge and being inside puts them at risk of possibly being infected. While we know there are several inmates held in a cell, there is no ability for them to physical distance from each other. Also at risk are those on the other side of the bars, guards, and staff of the facility. Tune in to the Unpublished Café today to learn about the conditions in Canada’s jails and prisons, and let us know what you think: Should low r

  • COVID-19: USA Denies Canada N95 Medical Masks

    05/04/2020 Duración: 23min

PUBLISHED: 04/05/2020 With neighbors like this, who needs friends? While Canadians self isolate and practice physical distancing, we glance south of the 49th parallel and see chaos, and in the midst of the chaos came word, the US President was ordering 3M to stop sending masks and ventilators to Canada and Latin America 3M, in it’s Defense pointed out the humanitarian impacts of such a move. It certainly might make some Canadians look to the south with a different view. Longest undefended border in the world, yet the US was willing to throw it away. People were upset with the order from the US government, interesting to note that 3M has a number of plants in Canada, you wonder how this might impact Canada-US relations in the future. Tune in to the Unpublished Café as we explore the long-term consequences of Trumps decision to shut Canada out. ———————————— GUESTS: Amir Attaran https://commonlaw.uottawa.ca/en/people/attaran-amir Professor of Law and Medicine at University of Ottawa Peggy Mason https://rideauins

  • COVID-19: Food Safety in Canada

    29/03/2020 Duración: 30min

PUBLISHED: 03/21/2020 The long line ups and bare shelves have somewhat dissipated with the retail and food industries soothing Canadians that there is ample supply for everyone. Most eateries and restaurants are trying to stay afloat by offering delivery and take out. That brings some more questions about food safety. Farmers will start planting shortly for the upcoming season. Traditionally, they hire tens of thousands of foreign workers through the season..There have been some conflicting messages recently as the retail sector maintains we have enough capacity, while other groups worry that farmers and farming are not considered an essential service Coming up on the Unpublished Cafe, we look at the supply chain in Canada and see if there are any gaps in safety. • COVID-19: Canada's Federal Emergencies Act

    26/03/2020 Duración: 29min

PUBLISHED: 03/26/2020 The Emergencies Act was brought in in 1988 to replace the previous War Measures Act. It would give the federal government sweeping powers over the provinces if they become overwhelmed when dealing with a major crisis. Every province in Canada has declared a State of Emergency in its jurisdiction as the Covid 19 virus continues to spread. But is it enough? To many, this would classify as a public welfare emergency. The Prime Minister is in constant contact with the provincial premiers regarding the pandemic and whether the Emergencies Act is required. The government has said it would only use the legislation when all other avenues are exhausted. While the Emergencies Act has broad sweeping powers, not everyone believes it’s needed. Coming up on the Unpublished Cafe, we will take a look at the impact of the Act on the economy, which has been shaken to its core. ———————————— GUESTS: Amir Attaran https://commonlaw.uottawa.ca/en/people/attaran-amir Robyn Gibbard https://www.conferenceboard.ca

  • The COVID-19 Virus

    21/03/2020 Duración: 33min

PUBLISHED: 03/21/2020 The virus originated in China's province of Wuhan around December - the virus was transmitted from animals to human in wild-animal meat market. The first reported death appears in January, and 9 days later its being reported around the world. In February, deaths are happening outside of China after the WHO declares Covid-19 a global health emergency. The virus is discovered to have been used in a cult ritual. In March, Covid-19 is declared a pandemic, and Canada reaches a thousand total cases. By March 21st, the amount of Global Cases surpasses three hundred thousand. Tens of millions of Canadians are staying home - the impact that the virus is having on the economy has surmounted beyond that of 2008, and 9-11. Five thousand Canadians sign up to be protected by the 82-billion-dollar aid package announced by the Federal Government following their decision to keep Canadians at home. Today on the Unpublished Cafe, we'll take a look at the economic and psychological impacts of something as u

  • Canadian Telecomms and Broadcasting Regulations

    14/03/2020 Duración: 48min

PUBLISHED: 04/14/2020 Brave and bold or same old same old. Two ends of the spectrum when it comes to Canada’s Broadcasting and Telecommunications Legislative Review panel’s final report. The result of 18 months of industry experts outlining what is needed in this country as the industry grapples with new, limber competitors in their traditional world. The report provides us with 97 recommendations for the industry. Some may never see the light of day, while others could bring some challenges. On the political side of the Broadcasting and a Telecommunications Legislative Review panel report, the Conservatives felt it didn’t go far enough. Netflix scoops up viewers from traditional broadcasters. With technology now, anyone can become a “broadcaster’ with very little financial cost. The BTLR panel’s final report could transform what we watch and listen to. But what of the costs? Do social media giants like Facebook and Twitter need to be brought under government oversight? • Liberal Throne Speech 2019

    17/12/2019 Duración: 30min

PUBLISHED: 12/16/2019 The federal Liberals unwrapped their Throne Speech with many promises for Canadians. The only problem is the vision is about as clear as your view in a blinding snow storm. Governor General Julie Payette read the road map the Grits are laying out for their next mandate. This one will be a little trickier to navigate with just a minority behind the wheel, depending on the support of the Bloc or NDP to make things happen. Within the foresight for Canadians, more strides toward climate change, a more affordable middle class, an aim to reduce homelessness and a closer relationship with Canada’s indigenous peoples. All laudable goals, but the point of a map is to tell you how to get somewhere, and this seems to be quite vague. The vote on the Throne Speech will come in the New Year. ———————————— Please register your vote on this topic at: https://www.unpublished.vote/issue/527/2019-liberal-throne-speech and email your MP to tell them why you think the way you do. ———————————— GUESTS: Warren K

    29/09/2019 Duración: 30min

PUBLISHED: 09/29/2019 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast:Despite declining unemployment and GDP growth in Canada, two thirds of Canadians feel the economic deck is stacked against them according to Ipsos Public Affairs. Traditionally, in our election cycle, one of the key issues on the trail is the economy. Canadians are particularly protective of health care, and it is gearing up to be one of the main issues up for debate. Health care affects us all differently depending on need. It seems the upcoming federal election is being drowned out by the mud slinging and rhetoric which is distracting from the real issues affecting us all. • Elizabeth May

    08/09/2019 Duración: 24min

These are heady days for Canada’s Green Party. A second MP in the House of Commons, more than just moral victories in PEI where it makes up the official Opposition. In BC, where they control the balance of power and in Ontario where a Green MPP sits at Queens Park. But can all the goodwill translate into seats in the next federal election. While the writ has yet to drop, it could at any moment and an election campaign would be under way. And for Green Party leader, Elizabeth May there has never been more wind in her sails as she embarks on the quest for more Green MPs in the House of Commons. The Green Party is polling higher than it has in years to the point it’s nipping at the heels of the NDP. The Party’s key issue, the environment-climate change is in the spotlight in this election. Elizabeth May has been leader of the Green Party since 2006 and first elected to the House of Commons in 2011.

  • Foreign Affairs in Canada's 2019 Election

    18/08/2019 Duración: 34min

PUBLISHED: 08/18/2019 Today on the Unpublished Cafe podcast: Will Canada’s federal election be won on the international stage? Voters are mere two months away from heading to the ballot box. When the Liberals came to power in 2015, Justin Trudeau pledged “Canada is back” and “Sunny Ways” as a counter to the ten years of Stephen Harper. But the positive words and ambition were somewhat derailed by the 2016 US election which vaulted Donald Trump into the Oval Office. Since then Canada’s foreign policy has been turned upside down by his erratic behavior. Today on the Unpublished Cafe, we’ll take a look at Canada’s approach to foreign policy and whether it will be a major influence in the upcoming election. We’ll chat with Stephen Saidemen, the Paterson Chair in International Affairs, as well as Director of the Canadian Defense and Security Network at Carleton University and get his perspective on the parties approach to foreign affairs. Justin Trudeau notes that the world needed more Canada and he would bring i
