Combining the forces of law enforcement, well-known forensic experts, and college students the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute (CCIRI) has investigated several high-profile crimes including Natalee Holloway, Chanda Levy, The Boston Strangler, and Tupac Shakur. Founded by Sheryl McCollum 10 years ago, the CCIRI is a partnership that brings together researchers, practitioners, and the criminal justice community to develop new capabilities and work collectively to advance research, training and techniques in solving cold cases. The objectives of CCIRI are to provide the means, resources and guidance for Criminal Justice students to determine the solvability of actual unsolved crimes. October is traditionally designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Shattered Lives Radio takes great pleasure in bringing back High Point, NC Police Chief Marty Sumner to help educate listeners about offender based policy initiatives.  Chief Sumner was first introduced to the show in August, 2014 and listeners were able to get an overview of the success of the proactive approach to domestic violence cases and how statistics have decreased in his jurisdiction since its inception. Gore welcomes former NY Investigator and full time crime author, Denny Griffin to give listeners an update on the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Sgt. Patrick Rust. Working with the Rust family, Griffin has worked diligently to uncover the clues that will resolve many of the unanswered questions.   Sgt. Patrick Rust was assigned to the 10thMountain Division headquartered at Fort Drum in Watertown, New York. In January 2007, he returned from deployment to Afghanistan. Following a 30 day leave he was back on post. The then 24-year-old Rust was a local boy and was familiar with Watertown and the surrounding area. He didn’t have a driver’s license or vehicle. On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, Sgt. Rust moved most of his personal effects from the barracks on base to share an apartment with a fellow soldier at 156 Sterling Street, Apartment 4, in Watertown. His skeletal remains were found six months later in a farmer’s field about five miles outside of Watert

A refreshing new approach to combatting intimate partner violence by becoming proactive in the early stages is an important breakthrough by High Point, NC Chief of Police, Marty Sumner. Although traditional victim focus is still of utmost importance and resources for victims will always be needed, by curtailing offenders at the first offense there’s a likelihood that it will also restrict chronic offenders and remove the immediate danger to the victim more often.

When a sudden tragedy occurs, like homicide, many surviving loved ones go on to do great things in memory of the one they lost. Bexley, Ohio Police Chief Larry Rhinehart joins Shattered Lives Radio to discuss his role in domestic violence prevention and advocacy. Currently serving as the board president for Choices, a direct service provider to victims of violence in central Ohio, Rhinehart has a personal stake in the prevention of intimate partner violence and homicide after losing his sister. Chief Rinehart was the recipient of the 2004 Choices Peacemaker award for his efforts against domestic and relationship violence.

All across the country law enforcement agencies are called during hostage situations, whether hostages being held for demands, political purposes, or more commonly relationship disputes. None of the described situations tend to end well. Either the perpetrators or the hostages are harmed, physically, mentally and emotionally. But what about the ripple effect these situations have on not only the immediate victims and family, but the law enforcement and other personal, as well as those who put endless hours negotiating for a safe resolution?
