On tonight’s show we’ll talk with Debra Gauthier, author of Bright Lights, Dark Places. Debra was one of the first female patrol officers hired under the same standards as men on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. She spent 21 years on the force, leaving it in 2001. During her tenure she faced down suspects who were high on PCP, had high-speed chases into on coming traffic and used her martial arts skills to subdue burly men. But not all of Debra’s battles while working as a police officer were with criminals. She sometimes faced discrimination in the male-dominated profession, suffering demotions and unsafe working conditions when other officers would not provide backup. Adding to the bias against her within the department was her sexuality. Debra was homosexual. Debra will share it all with us—the good, the bad and the ugly.     When a parent, or parents, are incarcerated what happens to their children? Often meted out to other family members or foster care, the children of incarcerated parents face unique challenges within our society. Shattered Lives guest, Marilyn Gambrell,  took on the challenge to create programs to assist this segment of children to recognize their worth and better address their needs. Through her organization, No More Victims, Gambrell reaches out to the community, schools, faith based community and corrections departments to address such subjects as teen dating violence, gang involvement, self-injury, teen pregnancy, and supports children through incarceration and the re-entry process of their incarcerated parent.

The year was 1950 when a missing persons report proved to be the catalyst for one of the most suspenseful stories of double homicide ever recorded. The police refused to issue a missing persons report. The newspaper editor refused to make this a feature story. The District Attorney informed everyone there was no case. First of all there were no bodies. Second, one of the missing men had a history of wild jaunts to Mexico and if a crime had been committed, it was a perfect crime. No bodies, no motive and no clues. Ryan United will work diligently with prosecutors, court systems, and legislators to ensure that our nations children will remain protected from child predators and that a fate such as Ryans will never happen to another child. 

6 year old Isabel Celis has been missing from Tuscon, AZ since April.  Children reported missing usually get top priority from law enforcement, and national and local media outlets.  This case seems to have grown cold, and when information dries up, so does the media coverage and investigations.   Peter Hyatt has covered the case extensively and will update listeners on the latest developments as well as discuss what statements those surrounding the case reveal.  Is the truth being told?
