Film Flams

This is the perfect open to the October movie-thon! On the face Cabin In The Woods is a masterpeice of horror genre satyre but also finds a way to comment on the movie industry as a whole.

This week's Film Flam is one of my favorite movies; Mallrats. Probably the best view askewniverse movie and the first one I saw as a young, soon-to-be Kev smith fan. Watch and listen along as David and I fanboy this peace of 90s cultural history.

Does Riggan have speacial powers? Probably not, But I’m pretty sure Michael Keaton does. This movie showcases Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton and many others. Possibly the most intentional casting for a movie covering art, self doubt, self identity, and celebrity. A deconstruction balanced in dark comedy. Listen along as David and I watch one of my favorite and one of David’s most “meh” movies of all time.

Xanadu is a 1980 musical in which an artist needs inspiration to run a night club, I guess. To follow his dreams of being an artist by not painting a single painting the entire movie. Oh, but there is street art that comes to life and somehow helps... Xanadu.

David and Bo watch the third installment of the Alien franchise, Alien 3.

David and I continue the Alien franchise with my personal favorite. Aliens. Disney's newest princess Ripley fights the evil queen in this fairy tale thriller.

We round out the end of our Aline series with the final (chronologically speaking) installment; Alien: Resurrection. This movie has some redeeming qualities but overall is a prime example of how you can have all the right people involved and all the best intentions but still miss the mark. Also there was a giant pregnant queen that gave birth to an xeno-human abomination with Muppet eyes.

J.J. Abrams said that Galaxy Quest was "One of the best" Stat Trek films ever made. We have to at least agree that it is one of the best Sci-fi adventure movies ever made and it's most likely due to the ability to be funny while not belittling Sci-fi fans. The Sci-fi fandom parody that laughs with you but not at you.

I'm really excited for the third installment of the Kevin Smith Canadian horrors, Moose Jaws. But I would be a terrible fan if I watched Moose Jaws without seeing the second installment. Yoga Hosers is one half Clerks level genius and one half ridiculous, hilarious, cartoonish comedy. Follow along as we witness the wurst Canada has to offer.

Tusk is a smart and interest work of art that balances Kevin Smith style humor with torture porn style horror.

Most definitely not the shining light of the franchise, Terminator 3 was the first non James Cameron Terminator and it may as well have had Fonzie jumping a shark on skies. The movie has some questionable casting and some even more questionable plot points. All that said, we still freaking love it. It's kind of like having a dog that eats your shoes. It's going to consistently ruin your day but maybe every once in a while it'll hump your friend's leg.

David and I watch the fourth installment of the Terminator franchise. Terminator Salvation. The plot of this movie would make a great video game plot, with many different backdrops and multiple goals spread out through plot twists and intertwining stories. While this movie seems to be an attempt at the franchise's SALVATION (see what I did there?) it's plot is just a little convoluted compared to the original two movies and being rated PG 13 brings it back to the family friendly third installment. I think this movie is better than Rise of The Machines but still doesn't quite live up to the legacy.

Our Film Flams of the Terminator saga has come to an end. An end that returns to it's beginning. The Genesis installment of the Terminator franchise starts before the opening of the first movie. The story actually covers the chronological distance of the entire series. The Terminator series was fun to cover in Film Flams and it really brought me more appreciation for a series I already enjoyed.

David and I watch one of my favorite movies of recent release. Warcraft!  Being a huge World of Warcraft fan this commentary has almost no dead spots as David and have a lot to talk about in this commentary. We discuss the things Warcraft does great and the things that are not so great. But all-in-all I really do love this movie and I hope Blizzard and Legendary decide to do more.

One of David's favorite childhood movies, The classic Hercules starring Lou Ferrigno. This is an icon movie that represents a genre and time period of movie history. Plus it has plenty of scantily clad ladies in ridiculous costumes. Lou Ferrigno is Jacked and throws bears into Space, Check it out if you haven't yet.

David and I haven't done a Film Flam in over two years! This was a great come back! Mainly because neither David nor myself had ever seen the movie AIR before but where both intrigued by a Norman Reedus starring, Robert Kirkman produced sci-fi movie, filmed on a small set with a small cast.
