Good Friday morning from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Last night we watched dueling town halls featuring President Trump on NBC and his opponent Joe Biden on ABC. As expected the tone and substance of each event were radically different. So with one debate left the question now is are the polls correct, or are we in for a close and possibly disputed election? Meanwhile one member of Morning Edition is feeling daring this morning and trying out a new ghost pepper donut from a noted local vendor… we find out how she deals with the heat, or lack thereof. It is indeed a holiday in this country: still Columbus Day for some, but also Indigenous People’s day to many, a debate that is likely to continue for some time. Joe is back in the anchor chair after a long weekend, but Karen is the lucky team member who got the holiday off today. We catch you up on the latest news from the weekend including a mixed bag for Boston sports fans, and the postponement of the Patriots game due to Covid concerns. Joe and Karen are off today after a long week which included a special broadcast following the Massachusetts Senatorial Debate on Monday night, so the great Henry Santoro has agreed to forego sleep and join us this morning. The Patriots game has once again been delayed to Monday night after another prominent player tested positive for Covid-19. Henry is amazed at the impact and earning potential of “Tik-Tokkers” and other influencers, some as young as four years old. Good Thursday morning from the GBH Morning Edition team. Joe Mathieu has assembled our Early Edition crew and we’re all lucky that our power stayed on and our alarms went off for us as scheduled. A massive wind, thunder and rain storm cut across the state yesterday, downing trees and limbs and leaving tens of thousands without power. Meanwhile the one and only vice-presidential debate went down last night, we react to what we saw, including a now-famous fly who made himself at home. An almost full moon this morning for a brand new month. Like many Americans, we’re all still feeling a hangover from Tuesday night’s debate. Joe Biden hit the campaign trail in Pennsylvania and Ohio and called the President’s behavior during the debate “a national embarrassment”. We’re questioning whether anyone in our audience actually got sleep last night after witnessing the first Presidential debate of the 2020 election. Train wreck and dumpster fire are some of the phrases used by analysts to describe the bickering we watched. Most of our team went to bed and woke up early to watch it on tape, and that seemed to be the right move for consuming what Joe described as a televised shot of espresso. Joe Mathieu and our Morning Edition team are revving up for tonight’s debate, the first of this Presidential race and a big reminder that we go to the polls in just 35 days. Our Facebook audience seems excited for it, but the big question for this crew is do we stay up late, or record it and get up early? Some restrictions are easing for restaurants, but there’s a controversy brewing in the local skating community, where ice skating rinks have been allowed to re-open, while roller skating rinks remain closed. Big sports day this morning as the season ends for the Celtics and Red Sox, and the employment of Sox manager Ron Roenicke comes to an end as well. Roenicke offered up some thoughts on his departure that might be useful for anyone looking to softly end a relationship. At least the Patriots had a good Sunday. Meanwhile its a big week in politics with the release of President Trump’s tax returns thanks to the NY Times, and the first of three Presidential debates happening tomorrow night. We’re down a man this morning but we shall persevere and push on with a short staff. It’s all but over for the Red Sox, and the Fenway finale for 2020 ended with a thud. Meanwhile the President continues to erode faith in democracy by refusing to commit to ceding power if he is not reelected. Trump’s comments raised the ire of Governor Baker, who we think sounds a lot like a disappointed Dad. Good Wednesday morning from GBH News and our entire Morning Edition crew. It is in fact the entire morning edition team today, with the triumphant return of our main man Joe Mathieu. Joe is happy to see the whole team and our social media friends this morning, but came in on the heels of a broken water heater at home and a very cold shower. This begs the question: if your office has a shower, would you actually use it? Meanwhile Covid-19 is still very much a problem in this country, and now an entire dormitory at Merrimack College in North Andover is under quarantine.
