In Galatians 5:1-6, Paul urges us to stand confidently in the freedom Christ has won for us in the gospel. We must get the gospel "order" correct with indicatives always coming before imperatives. We exercise gospel obedience instead of legal obedience. Legal obedience is fueled by a desire to earn or merit acceptance with God by doing some good work out of fear SO THAT God will love you. Gospel obedience is fueled by love and thankfulness of what Christ has completely done for us and we obey out of joy, not drudgery. www.seancole.net

God's free gift of grace in salvation cannot co-exist with our failed attempts to earn salvation. Paul refers to Genesis 16 and 17 and the narrative of Hagar and Sarah as an allegory to contrast the covenant of grace with the covenant of works. www.seancole.net

Elders are sovereignly and supernaturally called by the Holy Spirit to shepherd the flock through godly integrity, mature leadership, and expositional preaching and teaching. 1 Timothy 3:1-7 gives 15 qualifications of an elder. Pastor Sean starts in Acts 20 with Paul's instructions to elders in Ephesus and then goes through each of the 15 character traits. www.seancole.net
