  • #514 - New Dukie, Roach’s Decision, Portal Prospects, and NBA News

    11/05/2023 Duración: 47min

The Duke roster got a new addition with Stanford transfer Neil Begovich and while he projects as a practice player, his transfer presents a golden opportunity for the Duke Basketball Roundup gang to chat about Duke's amazing success at holding onto players this off-season. With the portal window due to close in only hours, Duke has not lost a single player to the rush to find greener pastures. The DBR Podcast guys also dive into the decision facing Jeremy Roach. He didn't get invited to any of the NBA combines. Does that mean his only real choice is to return to Durham? And, after the break, the guys give us quick hits on a bunch of Duke topics including JJ Redick eyeing a NBA coaching gig and some of the strange transfer decisions hitting other ACC teams this off-season.  Learn more about your ad choices. • #513 - Big-man Target and a Shameful Score

    04/05/2023 Duración: 37min

The Duke Basketball Roundup dives into the latest big man in the portal getting interest from Jon Scheyer and his staff. His name is Aziz Badaogo and he was a shot-blocking machine last season at Utah Valley. We discuss how he would fit on the 2023-24 Blue Devils and why Duke might interest this young man from Senagal. After the break, the podcast crew does something unusual... they are critical and disappointed in the Duke basketball team. The NCAA has released its latest Academic Progress Report and Duke hoops scored embarrassingly low. The DBR guys dove into the numbers and they think they know exactly what went wrong and when it happened. Have a listen and let us know if you agree. Write to us at DBRPodcast at gmail dot com. • #512 - Catching up on recruiting!

    01/05/2023 Duración: 50min

We are back! It’s been a couple of weeks where due to work and travel we couldn’t get together, but now we have some things to talk about. Sam, Jason, and Donald are here to bring it to you on Episode 512! Duke lands a top 10 recruit in the Class of 2024 in Isaiah Evans, and we begin by discussing what he brings to the table. There’s a reason people call him Baby Ingram. We then use that to enter a discussion about Cooper Flagg and the potential for him to reclassify into the Class of 2024 to join Evans and Darren Harris. Next, the transfer portal seemed to be hot, with Duke considering several big men a couple weeks ago. Now, it seems the market has cooled off a bit, with Duke not landing anyone yet. We discuss whether that’s a good thing and if Duke feels confident about the players already on the roster. After the break, we get into the 2023-24 schedule, and Duke appears to be foregoing some of the more traditional early season tournaments to set up a multi-team event of their own. Except, this one would f

  • #511 - Flipping out over Flip and Mgbye-bye

    11/04/2023 Duración: 52min

Wow, one of the biggest news hours in Duke history this morning as Kyle Filipowski announced he is running it back for his sophomore season at Duke and then, minutes later, superstar recruit Mackenzie Mgbako said he would be looking for a different school and not coming to Duke. The Duke Basketball Roundup podcast gang is here to break down all of it. First, they talk about Flip's return, an almost unprecedented thing for Duke as a player eschewed being a first round draft pick so he could come back to school. The podcast looks at historical comparisons for what Duke will return next season and also discusses how Flip can evolve his game this summer to be even better next season. After the break the guys do a deep dive into Mgbako's decision to go elsewhere. There are no hard feelings here as it just looks like the Duke roster may not have been a good fit for what MM wanted or needed from a college program.   Learn more about your ad choices. • #510 - Roach’s Future

    11/04/2023 Duración: 51min

Jeremy Roach is entering the NBA draft... but is he staying there? The Duke Basketball Roundup has plenty of thoughts and opinions on the decision facing Duke's captain. Should he stay or should he go? And, regardless of what he chooses, how will it impact other Dukies we expect to be on the roster in the 2023-24 season?  After the break, the guys come back with a conversation about the Nike Hoop Summit. Three future Dukies were in action and, for the first time, we got to see a glimpse of how good Mackenzie Mgbako can be.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #509 - Dereck Lively departs for NBA...replacement incoming?

    05/04/2023 Duración: 42min

Hello Duke fans and welcome to the Duke Basketball...Roundup? YES! With the calendar moving to April, it’s official...we are the Duke Basketball Roundup Podcast! We spend a couple of minutes going through the new name and some of the changes that are forthcoming to the show over the next week as we move to our new home on Podbean. The main highlight of the show isn’t us however...it’s the announcement that Dereck Lively has decided to depart Duke for the NBA Draft. Jason, Sam, and Donald reflect on the year that D-Live had for the Blue Devils and how they think he will carve out a terrific NBA career. We will always have 8 blocks against UNC, and his defense and motor are going to be something that teams really want in a 5 at the next level. After the break, with Dereck Lively leaving, Duke is looking at the transfer portal. There are 4 big men out there that are looking at new homes that Duke has either contacted or fans are loosely linking to Duke, and we go through those players and what they bring to the

  • DBR Bites #23 - Mitchell Year 2 loading!

    30/03/2023 Duración: 22min

On DBR Bites Episode 23, we have Donald and Sam react to the news that Duke forward Mark Mitchell is returning to Durham for his sophomore season! We discuss how valuable Mitchell’s return will be to this team and what he can improve on in year 2. His return is giving potential DPOY vibes! We also comment on where he can improve on offense, and how his leadership and motor could serve the incoming freshman class well. Needless to say, we’re excited about Mark Mitchell’s return! We also get some late breaking news while we’re recording that Kyle Filipowski has won the Kyle Macy Award, an award given to the nation’s top freshman. Flip wins the award over Alabama’s Brandon Miller. It’s a surprise award, but Flip deserves it and we react in real time to him winning this prestigious award. He’s the 5th Blue Devil to win the award, joining Jabari Parker, Brandon Ingram, Marvin Bagley III, and Zion Williamson. We will be back as soon as the next player announces what they’re going to do, so you should probably look

  • #508 - Whitehead chooses NBA, McDonald’s All Americans on the menu

    29/03/2023 Duración: 42min

We have our first departure to the NBA Draft, and we discuss it on Episode 508. Dariq Whitehead is leaving Duke for the NBA, and we are not surprised given his draft prognosis falling somewhere in the mid-to-late first round. We discuss what he brought to the table and where he could fit at the next level. There’s a nice discussion about the Dariq Whitehead that was expected when he arrived on Duke’s campus as well as how he evolved with the injuries he suffered in the preseason and during the regular season. We’re all in agreement that his workouts will determine where he ends up in the draft. After the break, we discuss the McDonald’s All American games that took place last night in Houston. Duke had 3 recruits in the Boys Game - Sean Stewart, Jared McCain, and Mackenzie Mgbako - and Jadyn Donovan in the Girls Game. We break down how each of them did, and we’re pretty convinced: the future is bright for both Duke Men’s and Women’s Basketball. We will be back in your feeds again soon once we find out some of

  • #507 - Proctor returns

    28/03/2023 Duración: 33min

On this episode of the soon-to-be-renamed and now vaguely pre-rebranded Duke Basketball Report Podcast, we're talking Tyrese Proctor's return to Duke for his sophomore campaign, Celeste Taylor's news about the same, and Duke recruits' performance in the skills events at the McDonald's All American Game festivities on Monday. Proctor announced his return with a quick social media post, and Jason and Sam are giddy, not just because they correctly predicted that Proctor would return, but because Proctor could be the latest Duke guard to show significant improvement in his second year, with recent examples like Tre Jones, Luke Kennard, and Grayson Allen for him to look up to. Jason tells us how much these guys improved after their move to West Campus, and we speculate about the ways that Proctor will distinguish himself with a full summer working with the staff and team in Durham. After the break, we dive into Celeste Taylor's decision to return to Duke for one last season, and we finish with Jared McCain's perfo

  • #506 - Who Stays & Who Goes - Part 2

    24/03/2023 Duración: 01h52s

If you missed the last episode of the Duke Basketball Report podcast, go back to #505 right now and listen to it. Only once you have heard the podcast crew break down the stay or portal or NBA decisions of the perimeter players on the Duke team are you allowed to listen to episode #506 in which they do a deep dive on the big men. Kyle Filipowski, Mark Mitchel, Dereck Lively, and Christian Reeves all face decisions that could make or break Duke's future. The podcast gang even takes a few minutes to look at what the future holds for the one big man who has made his intentions known, 6th year senior Ryan Young. As with the last episode, the pod gang gives you their predictions on what each player WILL do and what they SHOULD do, and the answers are not always one and the same. • #504 - Stats game recap

    22/03/2023 Duración: 57min

We're all still reeling from the abrupt end to Duke's season in the first weekend of the tournament, but as is tradition on the DBR Podcast, we are back today to recap the stats game, our special way of previewing the season. You will have to listen to find out who won, but it was not a pretty thing. It turns that Duke's season took many different turns than what we anticipated, from the good (Kyle Filipowski 2nd team All-ACC! Tyrese Proctor's emergence!) to the new as good (mostly injuries and Jacob Grandison not hitting his threes). All that said, though, we are holding ourselves accountable to our picks, at least the ones that were easy enough to track. After the break, we review what happened in the second round of the women's NCAA tournament, where Duke lost a heartbreaker in Cameron to Colorado. Similar to the men, it's a frustrating way to end the season, but also similar to the men, the future appears to be bright, so we eagerly await the return of Duke Basketball this fall. Stay in touch with us thro

  • #503 - The end of Scheyer’s first season

    19/03/2023 Duración: 01h09min

It's certainly not the most fun mostly annual tradition, but the podcast is back to talk about Duke's loss to Tennessee on Saturday, a loss that ends Jon Scheyer's first season in the head coaching role. We dive deep into how the Volunteers dismantled Duke on defense. The Blue Devils had their lowest first half scoring output of the season, and without Mark Mitchell, Duke didn't have enough playmakers to counter Tennessee's attack at either end. Turnovers returned to plague Duke in a way we thought Scheyer's squad had shored up given their performance in the first round. All that said, we have to spend a few minutes on the officiating, which most of us were not thrilled with. It was an overly physical game, and Duke couldn't figure out how to overcome the circumstances. After the break, we have to touch on Duke Blue Planet's feature video on Dereck Lively II and his mother and on Purdue's loss to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the tournament. We'll be back on a future episode to recap the season an

  • DBR Bites #22 - We Volunteer this preview

    17/03/2023 Duración: 29min

The Duke Blue Devils are in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament, and on DBR Bites Episode 22, we preview their upcoming game against the Tennessee Volunteers. Duke is riding high off its victory over Oral Roberts, but they are meeting a team that has been great defensively all season. Jason gives us the metrics on what Tennessee has been doing great and where they may have weaknesses. They are missing their star point guard, but they have plenty of reasons why they are still a really good team. After he takes off, Sam and Donald continue the preview by highlighting Tennessee's season and how they've struggled in recent weeks. Sam discusses some of the other key players and gives us a warm bath on Rick Barnes and the most recent times Duke has taken on Barnes-led teams. We will be back at some point after the game on Saturday, which is at approximately 2:40pm ET. Let's go Duke! Learn more about your ad choices. • #502 - Making easy work of Oral Roberts

    17/03/2023 Duración: 50min

The NCAA Tournament began yesterday, and the Duke Blue Devils starred in a big victory over Oral Roberts. We recap everything on Episode 502! After some of the great headlines we received, we get into the good. Duke had a ton of good in this game, beginning with the defense. We spend about 10 minutes discussing how great the defense was in this game and how some players who may have had off days on offense excelled on the defensive end for the Blue Devils. Oh don’t worry, we discuss the offense as well, with Jeremy Roach destroying everyone and Dariq Whitehead raining 3s. Duke was tremendous on the night and it led to it being a very relaxing evening for fans. We do pinpoint a couple of items that Duke could improve on as they advance in the tournament. After the break, we dish out our favorite plays, and there were plenty to choose from. Then, we have to talk about a couple of the major upsets from Day 1, including Furman over Virginia and Princeton over Arizona. We will be back in your feeds literally this

  • #501 - How to beat Oral Roberts

    15/03/2023 Duración: 54min

The Blue Devils dive into the big dance tomorrow night with a matchup against a very good Oral Roberts club. The DBR Podcast team went deep into the stats and the videotape to figure out what has allowed ORU to win every game they have played since early January. And at the core of this analysis is two players -- scoring guard Max Abmas, a three-point specialist, and 7-5 Connor Vanover, who's game is different from pretty much any man-mountain you have ever seen. The podcast crew looks at how Oral Roberts has done against other quality competition and what the matchups will look like when they play Duke. Anyone who thinks this game will be easy is fooling themselves. After the break, the podcast guys talk about something that has changed about Duke lately -- their pace of play. They explain why slowing things down has led to better results. And, before they guys are done with the edition of the most popular Duke podcast around, they also lay out the path for the Duke Devil women as they embark on their own ro

  • DBR Bites #21 - Bracket Busting with Booz!

    14/03/2023 Duración: 27min

The DBR Podcast is excited for the NCAA Tournament, and on Bites Episode 21, we welcome back Duke great and current ACC Network analyst Carlos Boozer to discuss the NCAA Tournament! Boozer has seen more ACC basketball than just about anyone, so we discuss the teams that made the NCAA Tournament and why they collectively have a chance to once again show that the conference deserves more respect than it’s getting. We of course talk about how far Duke can go and the key to success for the Blue Devils. We then discuss his partnership with the DraftKings Zero Right Bracket Challenge presented by Pepsi Zero Sugar, where picking the wrong teams could get you some serious cash! Most of us are already picking the wrong teams in the bracket, and in this bracket those same wrong picks can make you a winner. We also touch a bit on Boozer’s thoughts on Jon Scheyer and the job he’s done for Duke this year. Boozer is also the proud father of two twins - Cameron and Cayden - who are two of the best high school sophomores in

  • #500 - Kenny Dennard returns!!

    13/03/2023 Duración: 37min

We have reached the 500th episode of the DBR Podcast, and we’re so happy to welcome back Kenny Dennard to the show! The Dog is a beloved friend of the podcast and has featured on episodes 100, 200, 300, and 400, so it makes sense to bring him back on for this one. We have a nice discussion with Kenny about this year’s Duke Blue Devils team, which is a 5 seed in the East Regional and one of the popular picks to get to at least the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. We talk about what has worked well for the Blue Devils lately and the Dog gives us his bracket picks. We also get to reflect on this year’s team and the job Jon Scheyer has done in his first season as head coach. Kenny also gives some insight on what it’s like for a team that has big expectations to try and fight it out in the NIT after a season that didn’t go to plan. We love having Kenny Dennard on, and we thank all of you for being a part of 500 full episodes of the DBR Podcast. We will be back in your feeds real soon with more content this week,

  • #499 - NCAA Tournament, here we come!

    13/03/2023 Duración: 37min

The field has been revealed. The Duke Blue Devils find themselves criminally under-seeded as the #5 seed in the East Region, which is loaded with strong teams. But, the DBR Podcast crew is undaunted and actually thinks the Devils got a pretty good bracket, one that could easily end up with Duke cutting down nets and moving on to the Final Four. That notion seemed pretty far-fetched just a couple weeks ago, but with a team that seems to be peaking at just the right moment, there is plenty to be excited about. The Podcast gang also looks at other ACC teams and the opponents they will face as the conference again tries to put on an impressive showing to prove the pundits wrong about the strength of the league. After the break, the Pod has more to say about Duke's victory in the ACC Tournament, including some interesting tidbits about the players from Duke who made it onto the All-Tournament team. Get ready for a big week from the podcast, as they have a couple great guests lined up as we get ready for the start
