  • Secure Act 101

    13/02/2020 Duración: 26min

After I wrote about the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act, I received a slew of questions from readers.  So to help clear up some of the confusion, we’re bringing on IRA guru Ed Slott. (Ed will also join us for a tax season related episode) The Secure Act includes significant changes to retirement accounts, including: Age Limit Eliminated for Traditional IRA Contributions Beginning in 2020, the new law eliminates the age limit for traditional IRA contributions (formerly 70 ½). Now, those who are still working can continue to contribute to a traditional IRA, regardless of their age. RMD Age Raised to 72 The SECURE Act also raises the age for beginning RMDs to 72 for all retirement accounts subject to RMDs. IRA owners reaching age 70 ½ in 2020 catch a break and will not have to take their first RMD in 2020 now that the RMD deadline has been extended to age 72. New Exception to the 10% Penalty for Birth or Adoption The SECURE Act adds a new 10% penalty exception for birth or adop

That's the discussion with Kaeli from California. Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. • How Big Tech Betrayed All of Us

    06/02/2020 Duración: 29min

In Don’t Be Evil, Financial Times global business columnist Rana Foroohar tells the story of how Big Tech lost its soul, and ate our lunch. “Don’t be evil” was enshrined as Google’s original corporate mantra back in its early days, when the company’s cheerful logo still conveyed the utopian vision for a future in which technology would inevitably make the world better, safer, and more prosperous. Unfortunately, it’s been quite a while since Google, or the majority of the Big Tech companies, lived up to this founding philosophy.  Today, the utopia they sought to create is looking more dystopian than ever: from digital surveillance and the loss of privacy to the spreading of misinformation and hate speech to predatory algorithms targeting the weak and vulnerable to products that have been engineered to manipulate our desires. How did we get here? How did these once-scrappy and idealistic enterprises become rapacious monopolies with the power to corrupt our elections, co-opt all our data, and control the largest

  • The Story Behind Warby Parker

    23/01/2020 Duración: 29min

Warby Parker was founded with a rebellious spirit and a lofty objective: to offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price, while leading the way for socially conscious businesses. We’re lucky enough to have two of the founders with us in-studio as Neil Blumenthal and Dave Gilboa join us on the latest show.  By circumventing traditional channels, designing glasses in-house, and engaging with customers directly, Warby Parker is able to provide higher-quality, better-looking prescription eyewear at a fraction of the going price. The team believes that buying glasses should be easy and fun. It should leave you happy and good-looking, with money in your pocket. They also believe that everyone has the right to see. Almost one billion people worldwide lack access to glasses, which means that 15% of the world’s population cannot effectively learn or work.  To help address this problem, Warby Parker partners with nonprofits like VisionSpring to ensure that for every pair of glasses sold, a pair is distributed to som

  • The Infinite Game with Simon Sinek

    16/01/2020 Duración: 27min

How do we win a game that has no end?  Finite games, like football or chess, have known players, fixed rules and a clear endpoint. The winners and losers are easily identified. Infinite games, games with no finish line, like business or politics, or life itself, have players who come and go.  The rules of an infinite game are changeable while infinite games have no defined endpoint. There are no winners or losers, only ahead and behind. The question is, how do we play to succeed in the game we’re in? Our latest guest, Simon Sinek, author of The Infinite Game, offers a framework for leading with an infinite mindset.  On one hand, none of us can resist the fleeting thrills of a promotion earned or a tournament won, yet these rewards fade quickly.  In pursuit of a Just Cause, we will commit to a vision of a future world so appealing that we will build it week after week, month after month, year after year.  Although we do not know the exact form this world will take, working toward it gives our work and our life

    14/01/2020 Duración: 07min

  • Loserthink with Scott Adams

    09/01/2020 Duración: 32min

If you've been on social media lately, or turned on your TV, you may have noticed a lot of dumb ideas floating around. Such as, “we know when history will repeat and when it won't” or “we can tell the difference between evidence and coincidences.” Wrong! So says our latest guest, Scott Adams, author of Loserthink: How Untrained Brains Are Ruining America and also the man behind the Dilbert cartoon. If we're not careful, Adams says loserthink would have us believe that addicts should be responsible for fixing the opioid epidemic, and that your relationship fell apart simply because you chewed with your mouth open. Even the smartest people can slip into loserthink's seductive grasp. This book will teach you how to spot and avoid it, and will give you scripts to respond when hollow arguments are being brandished against you, whether by well-intentioned friends, strangers on the internet, or political pundits.  You'll also learn how to spot the underlying causes of loserthink, like the inability to get ego out of
