Yesterday was a washout at Fenway… after promoting opening day for the Red Sox all morning, mother nature fooled us all. Right before the end of yesterday’s Morning Edition the game was called off. So they’ll try and get the unofficial start of summer going again down in the Back Bay this afternoon. There’s no rain in the today’s forecast and the sun should be out, but the wind and cooler temperatures will keep things frosty. Meanwhile down at the Arboretum there’s a very special commencement ceremony upcoming. Have a great weekend, enjoy yourself safely, and thanks for tuning in to GBH Radio.

It’s opening day down at Fenway Park, which usually serves as an indicator that Spring is in full swing and Summer is right around the corner… but you might want to hold your horses after reading today’s forecast. However bad weather on opening day never stopped Red Sox fans before, so we’re expecting a raucous 12% capacity and socially-distanced crowd down at Fenway. Well, we had high hopes that our social media streaming struggles would end this morning, alas, they continue on. Bear with us Facebook fans, we’ll get their new streaming system sorted out soon. Covid numbers across the country are spiking again, and the new director of the CDC is sounding the alarm for states to consider slowing down their rollback of a Covid restrictions. Amidst those fewer restrictions, the Celtics welcomed a limited number of fans back to the Boston Garden for the first time in over a year. And Joe would like to eliminate our use of the world ‘normal’ in newscasts and beyond. Thanks for waking up with us, and thanks for tuning in to GBH.

Good Monday morning and welcome back to the working world from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We’re still missing Karen, who will return later this week, and we’re missing our Facebook Live friends as well… hopefully they’ll return this week as well (thank you for bearing with us while we sort it out). It looks like the international traffic jam at the Suez Canal is about to end, as workers in Egypt are hoping to fully free the vessel once high tide hits later this morning. Locally the mass-vax site at Fenway Park is officially closed, as that operation moves over to the Hynes Convention Center. And Celtics fans get their first taste of live action in over a year, as a 12% maximum attendance will be at the Garden tonight. Thanks for waking up with Morning Edition and GBH Radio.

It’s almost the weekend - thanks for getting it started with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. COVID numbers are spiking here and in other states, and we try and understand why amidst an increasingly vaccinated population. Meanwhile our New Hampshire division reports on the Granite State opening up vaccine availability to all adults. The Boston Garden welcomed back fans last night at a greatly reduced 12% capacity. Despite an overtime loss, the Bruins players did indeed appreciate hearing from the fans in person. Plus today is a big one for celebrity birthdays. We’re still down one of our core members for another week, but our early morning conversations shall continue regardless. The nighttime/early morning weather finally feels like Spring, the Suez Canal is somehow blocked off, and the Boston Garden will be open starting today for a select number of “legacy” fans. Boston Mayor Kim Janney’s swearing in was a historic moment for the city yesterday, and local Covid numbers have plateaued at best, but really are not improving like they need to be. Good morning, we made it to the midway point of the week, thanks for starting it with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Marty Walsh is officially now 11th in line for the US Presidency. Walsh was sworn in as labor secretary by Vice-President Kamala Harris. Here in Boston, acting Mayor Kim Janney will be officially sworn in today. Some of us on this program are having vaccine-envy as we continue to see social media reports and news clips of people younger than us getting their shots. We’re down a few people this morning, but we shall carry on and get this Tuesday started in our usual way. Sunset tonight will be at 7PM, the first time this year it crosses the 7 o’clock threshold - great for regular folks, not so great for nocturnal creatures like ourselves. After approval by the Senate, Mayor Walsh is on his way to DC to become labor secretary for the Biden administration. And a little trolling by Dodgers fans is taking place outside of Fenway Park. We’re basking in the glow of yesterday’s weather and regaling each other with tales of all the things we did outdoors. The fun doesn’t stop for most of this week as temperatures remain bearable, perfect of course for the first full week of Spring. Good morning, we made it to Friday, thanks for ending your work week with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Yesterday we told you to expect one more blast of winter this morning… but man were the meteorologists wrong about this one. A late shift in the weather pattern meant no snow, no temperatures below the freezing point, and no reason to leave a few extra minutes for safe driving it appears. Spring officially hits tomorrow and we’re more than ready for some warmer temperatures and outdoor living. Meanwhile the streaming services all decided to launch new “popcorn” content right as the weather gets better. Thanks for waking up with GBH, and thanks for contributing to our March pledge drive.
