  • GBH Early Edition Friday April 2nd, 2021

    02/04/2021 Duración: 16min

Good Friday morning, thanks for starting it with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Yesterday was a washout at Fenway… after promoting opening day for the Red Sox all morning, mother nature fooled us all. Right before the end of yesterday’s Morning Edition the game was called off. So they’ll try and get the unofficial start of summer going again down in the Back Bay this afternoon. There’s no rain in the today’s forecast and the sun should be out, but the wind and cooler temperatures will keep things frosty. Meanwhile down at the Arboretum there’s a very special commencement ceremony upcoming. Have a great weekend, enjoy yourself safely, and thanks for tuning in to GBH Radio.

  • GBH Early Edition Thursday April 1st, 2021

    01/04/2021 Duración: 15min

Good morning and welcome to Thursday from Joe Mathieu and GBH Radio’s Morning Edition crew. It’s opening day down at Fenway Park, which usually serves as an indicator that Spring is in full swing and Summer is right around the corner… but you might want to hold your horses after reading today’s forecast. It may be opening day, but rain and falling temperatures will make it a tough day to be outdoors. However bad weather on opening day never stopped Red Sox fans before, so we’re expecting a raucous 12% capacity and socially-distanced crowd down at Fenway. Plus the rain may make your commute a little more difficult than normal this morning. Thanks for waking up with us and thanks for starting your day with Early Edition and GBH.

  • GBH Early Edition Wednesday March 31st, 2021

    31/03/2021 Duración: 14min

Good morning and welcome to Wednesday from Joe Mathieu and the ENTIRE Morning Edition crew. We say ENTIRE because we’re happy to welcome back our team-leader Karen from some much deserved off-time. We’re also pleased to welcome back our Facebook Live family after missing them for a few days. Karen apparently has a direct line to Mark Zuckerberg and can get things fixed. We do some catching up and hear from our Facebook fans, who apparently missed us as much as we missed them. Plus the latest news you need to start your day is all on tap. Thanks for joining our entire crew this morning and sticking with us through a few technical snags, and thanks as always for starting your day with GBH Radio!

  • GBH Early Edition Tuesday March 30th, 2021

    30/03/2021 Duración: 13min

Good morning, thanks for starting your Tuesday with Joe Mathieu, the Morning Edition team and GBH Radio. Well, we had high hopes that our social media streaming struggles would end this morning, alas, they continue on. Bear with us Facebook fans, we’ll get their new streaming system sorted out soon. Covid numbers across the country are spiking again, and the new director of the CDC is sounding the alarm for states to consider slowing down their rollback of a Covid restrictions. Amidst those fewer restrictions, the Celtics welcomed a limited number of fans back to the Boston Garden for the first time in over a year. And Joe would like to eliminate our use of the world ‘normal’ in newscasts and beyond. Thanks for waking up with us, and thanks for tuning in to GBH.

  • GBH Early Edition Monday March 29th, 2021

    29/03/2021 Duración: 13min

Good Monday morning and welcome back to the working world from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We’re still missing Karen, who will return later this week, and we’re missing our Facebook Live friends as well… hopefully they’ll return this week as well (thank you for bearing with us while we sort it out). It looks like the international traffic jam at the Suez Canal is about to end, as workers in Egypt are hoping to fully free the vessel once high tide hits later this morning. Locally the mass-vax site at Fenway Park is officially closed, as that operation moves over to the Hynes Convention Center. And Celtics fans get their first taste of live action in over a year, as a 12% maximum attendance will be at the Garden tonight. Thanks for waking up with Morning Edition and GBH Radio.

  • GBH Early Edition Friday March 26th, 2021

    26/03/2021 Duración: 11min

It’s almost the weekend - thanks for getting it started with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. COVID numbers are spiking here and in other states, and we try and understand why amidst an increasingly vaccinated population. Meanwhile our New Hampshire division reports on the Granite State opening up vaccine availability to all adults. The Boston Garden welcomed back fans last night at a greatly reduced 12% capacity. Despite an overtime loss, the Bruins players did indeed appreciate hearing from the fans in person. Plus today is a big one for celebrity birthdays. Thanks for tuning in to GBH this week, and thanks again to everyone who contributed to our Spring membership and pledge drive.

  • GBH Early Edition Thursday March 25th, 2021

    25/03/2021 Duración: 14min

Good morning, thanks for kicking off your day with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We’re still down one of our core members for another week, but our early morning conversations shall continue regardless. The nighttime/early morning weather finally feels like Spring, the Suez Canal is somehow blocked off, and the Boston Garden will be open starting today for a select number of “legacy” fans. Boston Mayor Kim Janney’s swearing in was a historic moment for the city yesterday, and local Covid numbers have plateaued at best, but really are not improving like they need to be. Stay safe and enjoy the warmth before it dips cooler this weekend, and thanks for tuning in to GBH Radio.

  • GBH Early Edition Wednesday March 24th, 2021

    24/03/2021 Duración: 13min

Good morning, we made it to the midway point of the week, thanks for starting it with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Marty Walsh is officially now 11th in line for the US Presidency. Walsh was sworn in as labor secretary by Vice-President Kamala Harris. Here in Boston, acting Mayor Kim Janney will be officially sworn in today. Some of us on this program are having vaccine-envy as we continue to see social media reports and news clips of people younger than us getting their shots. Consensus seems to be that most of the younger people receiving their shots reside in states other than Massachusetts. Thanks for waking up with GBH News and 89.7 GBH Radio.

  • GBH Early Edition Tuesday March 23rd, 2021

    23/03/2021 Duración: 15min

Good morning, thanks for starting your Tuesday with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We’re down a few people this morning, but we shall carry on and get this Tuesday started in our usual way. Sunset tonight will be at 7PM, the first time this year it crosses the 7 o’clock threshold - great for regular folks, not so great for nocturnal creatures like ourselves. After approval by the Senate, Mayor Walsh is on his way to DC to become labor secretary for the Biden administration. And a little trolling by Dodgers fans is taking place outside of Fenway Park. Thanks for waking up with us as always, and thanks for supporting GBH during our Spring Pledge Drive.

  • GBH Early Edition Monday March 22nd, 2021

    22/03/2021 Duración: 12min

Good morning and Happy Monday from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We’re back at it for the work week but we are down one as Karen will be out for the week. We’re basking in the glow of yesterday’s weather and regaling each other with tales of all the things we did outdoors. The fun doesn’t stop for most of this week as temperatures remain bearable, perfect of course for the first full week of Spring. We recap some of yesterday’s virtual St. Patrick’s Day breakfast in Southie, and get you ready to face your Monday. Thanks for starting your week with GBH.

  • GBH Early Edition Friday March 19th, 2021

    19/03/2021 Duración: 13min

Good morning, we made it to Friday, thanks for ending your work week with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Yesterday we told you to expect one more blast of winter this morning… but man were the meteorologists wrong about this one. A late shift in the weather pattern meant no snow, no temperatures below the freezing point, and no reason to leave a few extra minutes for safe driving it appears. Spring officially hits tomorrow and we’re more than ready for some warmer temperatures and outdoor living. Meanwhile the streaming services all decided to launch new “popcorn” content right as the weather gets better. Thanks for waking up with GBH, and thanks for contributing to our March pledge drive. We appreciate you all!

  • GBH Early Edition Thursday March 18th, 2021

    18/03/2021 Duración: 17min

Good Thursday morning, thanks for starting it with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Our technical snags are behind us and we’re back online AND the radio to get you ready to face your day. We reacquaint ourselves with our Facebook family after missing them all yesterday. Stimulus checks are starting to show up in people’s bank accounts, including a few members of Morning Edition and a few of our Facebook fans. And the latest on whether we’ll actually see the return of snow on Friday. GBH’s Spring Pledge continues today and we thank you as always for your support. Have a great Thursday!

  • GBH Early Edition Wednesday March 17th, 2021

    17/03/2021 Duración: 16min

Good morning and Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Despite some technical snags, Early Edition’s broadcast must go on! (But apologies if you missed us on Facebook today, we hope to have that particular snag sorted out by tomorrow.) It’s St. Patrick’s Day, the second time this holiday has fallen during the pandemic, and we hope people are responsible today as we continue to dig ourselves out of this mess. Next year, we party! Meanwhile Joe breaks down how Irish we really are in this area and what state knocks Massachusetts down to number two. Thanks for waking up with us, and thanks as always for tuning in to GBH Radio

  • GBH Early Edition Tuesday March 16th, 2021

    16/03/2021 Duración: 15min

Good morning, welcome to Tuesday from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Early Edition crew. Our five man team is up early cooking up the news and getting you ready to face your day. The Patriots made the biggest splash in the NFL on day one of the free agent signing period yesterday. Many Americans are doing some surprising things with their stimulus money. And a global pandemic featuring a disease that attacks the lungs is apparently the perfect time to take take up smoking? The month is halfway over and Spring is around the corner, plenty to look forward to once we shake this cold. Thanks for waking up with GBH News and GBH Radio.

  • GBH Early Edition Monday March 15th, 2021

Good Monday morning, welcome to your work week from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Bundle up this morning, last week was only a preview of Spring, winter made its triumphant return on Saturday and let us all know who’s the boss this morning with sub 20 degree temperatures and a biting wind. We try and recap a Grammy’s show that none of us were able to stay up and watch, plus all the news you need to start your day. Thanks for waking up with us as always, stay warm and stay safe, and have a great Monday.

  • GBH Early Edition Friday March 12th, 2021

    12/03/2021 Duración: 16min

We made it to Friday, thanks for starting it with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Yes the weekend has arrived, but more importantly yesterday and today’s weather give us a solid glimpse of what is coming in the next few weeks: warmer temperatures and the chance to get outdoors. It will get colder starting tomorrow, so please seize the day. President Biden addressed the nation for the first time last night, we have the details. And Governor Baker is feuding with teacher’s unions about the timeline for school worker vaccinations. Get outside and enjoy this Friday, and thank you for tuning in to Early Edition and GBH Radio.

  • GBH Early Edition Thursday March 11th, 2021

    11/03/2021 Duración: 14min

Good morning, thanks for starting your Thursday with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We hope your schedule for today includes some built-in trips outside, because the meteorologists tell us this is the one we’ve been waiting for. We expect temperatures to push close to 70 degrees as Mother Nature gives us all a glimpse of what’s to come this Spring. Get out there and do something! In other news a certain former President is feeling neglected and needy. Plus we think Charlie Baker just may have tuned in to GBH yesterday morning based on his mood and some of his comments… we explain further. Have a great Thursday, now go outside!

  • GBH Early Edition Wednesday March 10th, 2021

    10/03/2021 Duración: 17min

Good Wednesday morning and thanks for waking up with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We begin this morning by catching you up on the latest, and let’s be honest… it’s all about the turning weather and the beautiful couple of days we’re in the midst of. But today on GBH Radio we’re breaking format and presenting ‘A Year Apart: How COVID Changed Us’ - a retrospective look at the past year living through a pandemic. So we went back a year in the Early Edition archives to hear how strange everything sounded one year ago as the pandemic unfolded and we all prepared to head home in what we thought at the time was a short-term quarantine. It’s amazing to hear how naive we all were at what was about to unfold. Stay tuned to GBH Radio all day for more, and thank you for waking up and sticking with us throughout this past year.
