  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast: Episode 520: Distractions

    10/06/2025 Duración: 40min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  This episodes is about distractions.  I have had a few myself resulting in a delay in airing this episode.  I am in the process of adding video to the podcast on a bimonthly basis.   It has resulted in a few more hurdles.  So apologies for the delay.  We make thousands of decisions each day from food choices to navigation.  These choices are made in the face of many distractions.  Just like stress, distractions never go away, we just have the opportunity to react differently.   Distractions occur both externally and internally.  An example might be someone trying to get you off your nutrition plan by temping you with a tasty desert.  Some may also call that guilting.  Internal distractions fuel the fire with the stories we tell ourselves to justify behaviors not inline with our goals.  That internal dialog can be quite convincing.  Have you ever been called a perfectionist?  Have you ever felt you had something down to a perfection?  Both often result in frustration and

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 518: Cruel Jewel was Surely Cruel

    21/05/2025 Duración: 31min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.    Cruel Jewel was not the outcome that I was looking for with regard to finishing.  The details are shared in this podcast.   The questions came earlier.  Am I too old, too slow to run these races? Why am I doing this to myself?  At 48 hours post race it sank in.  It is more about the start line than the finish line.  It is about taking a chance on the unknown.  I had the opportunity to confront a struggle that I chose which is different from having a struggle cast upon me.  I was able to experience that moment when all that exists is now.  I focused on the trail.  I watched for snakes, turns, rocks and roots.  I climbed for miles and pushed my limits.  I practiced going down through roots and rocks.  I heard birds, saw beautiful rocks and traversed lush green forests (some secondary to poison oak).  I experience the struggles of others and the help and encouragement of strangers and friends.  I felt immense peace in the struggles.  I am better for having started.  My fi

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast: I was abducted by the Skunk Ape

    29/04/2025 Duración: 34min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   This is a race recap of the Skunk Ape 50 mile ultra in Ocala, Florida.  I was not abducted by the Skunk Ape, but willingly got in a car with Motivation as it sped off the race course.  Actually, it was Jim in a Nissan along with three other people pulling out of the race at 30 miles.  New friends and many life lessons once again having the opportunity to learn from mistakes.   I am disappointed and I disappointed those who support me.  Everyday is not a win but I vow to learn the hard lessons at hand.  We all struggle and it is better to do it together.  That is why we are committed to helping people gain back their health through nutrition and exercise.  The struggle is real.  If you would like to learn more about the practice, check out the website: https://doctordulaney.com/membership/join-us/ Thanks for listening! • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 516: Risk versus Benefits

    18/04/2025 Duración: 32min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  It can be very difficult to navigate the risk of a medicine or a procedure versus the benefits.  It is impossible to apply the statistics of many to one.  The study populations may be very different than those we apply the risk/benefit ratios to.  Even with the best information, we are forced to make a gamble many times. While that gamble might be unavoidable, we should not be cavalier about the decision or fail to observe and ask questions on what might be the best plan of action.  Today's topic is atrial fibrillation and stroke risk.  What is the best course of action.  What risks can we accept.   As health care providers, we must continue to exam treatment options, but more importantly, what can we do to prevent atrial fibrillation and strokes.   It is certainly best to avoid atrial fibrillation in the first place.  That is certainly the best plan of action.  Plant based nutrition is a low risk way to get started.  If you would like to learn more about how our practic

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 515: Cardiac risk and Leaving Motivation Behind

    11/04/2025 Duración: 33min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  If you have lost your motivation for a healthy lifestyle, try looking for it on the couch.  Motivation is there for you as long as it does not require stepping into action.  All the catchy slogans and memes fade away when it comes time to cook healthy or step out into the cold morning for exercise.  If only I had an accountability partner.  If only my spouse would help.  I am just not motivated.   Why? That is the big question.  What is your why?   It is yours and yours alone.   Let us help you take the first step to finding a why that will come with you on the walks and workouts.  A why that will escort you to the grocery store and kitchen.   Modifying cardiac risks does not mean adding more testing.  It is about more action to live a healthy lifestyle.  No one is risk free despite the naivety of youth when it comes to dietary choices.  Lifestyle diseases live in the shadows and grow overtime.   That cheeseburger is a health hazard beginning in the processing through th

  • Gears, Risks, and Rewards

    04/04/2025 Duración: 33min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  Sometimes you can do more than you think you can.  You find another gear to go on.  Sometimes, you stop and say you did the best that you could.  How do you feel about those decisions the next day?  Regrets? I've had a few.  It is very easy to put our decisions in cruise control and just do what is easy.  Avoid the jolts or the risks.  Just cruise.  However, we don't just cruise, we decline and before you know it, health has left the body.  We are now cruising downhill collecting diagnosis and medications.  We did the best we could.... maybe.   Let me help you find another gear and enjoy acceleration and vitality.  The story will be much better. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2415879 Email me with questions at jami@doctordulaney.com Website: https://doctordulaney.com/membership/join-us/ Ebook: https://doctordulaney.com/powerful-plates-ebook/ Cookbook: https://a.co/d/6zVUluq Water distillers: https://mypurewater.com/?sld=jdulaney.  discount code: cleanwaterfo

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 513: Calcium Scores and Why Fiber is a Must Despite One Carnivores Opinion

    01/04/2025 Duración: 33min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   We all need to ask why and how.  Why do this procedure or eat this way, and how will it help me.  Will I live longer or better?  One might think that early detection will result in better cures or outcomes.  However, the treatment may cause significant problems and not affect longevity in a positive way.  Watching rarely results in a positive change.  Why not just eat plant based and exercise?   When I look at a procedure or dietary lifestyle, I look for long term outcomes.  How will that affect my longevity? How will it affect my health span.  A few years of testimonials is not what I am looking at.  What is the long term risk?  Today I respond to a internet doctor that suggests we do not need fiber.  None.  I also will review a recent study looking at who might benefit from a coronary calcium score.  Thanks for listening.  Email me at jami@doctordulaney.com Practice information at https://doctordulaney.com/membership/join-us/ Dietetic consultations: addie@doctordulane

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 512: Worry versus Building a Confidence Bank

    21/03/2025 Duración: 31min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  Should you worry if you are good at it?  Turns out most worries have little to do with the facts.  We could spend out time better enjoying the present moment.  What ifs can get in the way of forward progress.  Working a plan is much more calming then worrying about failure.   Today I will share with you my plan to make a confidence bank of the facts versus listing all of the potential pitfalls to my plan.  If you would like some help building a confidence bank in order to sustain a healthy lifestyle give our website a look at https://doctordulaney.com/membership/join-us/ Thanks for listening Email me at jami@doctordulaney.com Dietetic consultations: addie@doctordulaney.com Strength training: nathan@doctordulaney.com Water distillers: https://mypurewater.com/?sld=jdulaney. discount code: Cleanwaterforsophie Ebookhttps://doctordulaney.com/powerful-plates-ebook/ Cookbook: https://a.co/d/6zVUluq

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 511: Fiber, Expensive Cars, and Muscles

    14/03/2025 Duración: 39min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   I am joined by Addie Majnaric, RDN today to discuss fiber and it's role in health and the potential to limit the car size of GI doctors.  There are many hacks to lifespan on social media.  GLP-1 Agonists such as semaglutide are all the rage for curing obesity, addiction and various other ailments.  They run about $1600.00 per month.  It is too soon to determine if they result in increased longevity but a simple sulfonylurea drug such as Glyburide at $14.00 per month! was studied to see if it could lengthen life in mice and it did!  But there is a catch. There is also a catch with metformin another diabetic drug.  Most people are very willing to take something that might help if it is cheap or free even if there are potential side effects.   One thing that also improves longevity is increased muscle mass.  And the best way to get big muscles is to lift heavy things on a regular basis. I will give you why I am even more motivated to lift heavy things and propel my body in

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 510: Protein Needs and LP 33.7

    07/03/2025 Duración: 49min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   March is national nutrition month and we are gong to kick things off with our registered dietitian, Addie Majnaric RDN to discuss protein needs for all stages of life.  Our mission is movement and nutrition to promote a healthy lifespan.  Obtaining a balance plate of macronutrients include protein, carbohydrate and fat.  We would also like to include fiber in that equation because of the gut health benefits.  Plant based nutrition is the perfect way to get a wide variety of macronutrient sources that are easy to digest with the least toxicity.  I finished the Long Play 33.3 this past weekend and I will provide a recap of my experience running in the Withlacoochee State Park.  It was named one of the coolest places you have never been in North America and I would have to agree.  Enjoy the listen. • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 509: Switch On: Switch OFF

    27/02/2025 Duración: 25min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  We all have the ability to switch on and off mentally.  The problem is we do not often realize when or what causes the switch.  But when it does, we instantly create a dialog to support the change.  The switch is often not in sync with our bodies.  Some say it is the brains way of protecting the body from doing harm.  Sometimes it is the brains way of saying enough.  The problem comes when the brain pulls a fast one to get instant gratification or to avoid perceived mental anguish.   The switch becomes a crossroads for overall health and even life itself on occasion.  Learning what causes your switch to flip can be very helpful in healthy decision making.   This episode is dedicated to those who lived gallantly in body and mind until the very end.  They were wonderful mentors for a life well lived.  Thank you. • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast: Take and Aspirin and Call Me in the Morning: or NOT

    21/02/2025 Duración: 37min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   My mother used to joke and say she would take my night calls.  She would say take an aspirin and call me in the am.  Is that good advice?  The reality is that there is not a whole lot of good data to support the practice of taking an aspirin to protect against cardiovascular disease.  The reality is  there is not a whole lot of data on a lot of hospital practices.  I dive into this during this episode. What we do know is that plant based nutrition especially nitric oxide producing greens will decrease cardiovascular events.  Getting outside and exercising builds good immunity.  If you would like to learn more or have us help you choose the best health options check out our website athttps://doctordulaney.com/membership/join-us/ Email with questions: jami@doctordulaney.com Dietitian consultations: addie@doctordulaney.com Strength training: nathan@doctordulaney.com

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 507: Happy Hearts

    12/02/2025 Duración: 34min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   Welcome to a tour of your heart anatomy.  Today I will describe how it works and how to keep it working.  Valentine's day is about showing those we love we care.  Today I would ask you show a little love to your own heart and the rest of you for that matter.  Your heart pumps blood into your blood vessels that go to the rest of your body.  Your brain is very demanding and requires 20% of your energy production or else it sends unwanted messages to increase heart rate and blood pressure.   Those who exercise consistently over the years do the best at maintaining a good functioning vascular system and brain.  Eating plant based with a focus on nitric oxide producing greens will also help to maintain good blood vessels.   Treat this Valentine's day as a day of love and appreciation for healthy behaviors.  It might just be the best day ever.   Thank you for listening.  Email me with questions at jami@doctordulaney.com Dietitian consults: addie@doctordulaney.com Strength tra

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 506: Ferritin, Hyaluronic Acid and When to Supplement

    06/02/2025 Duración: 41min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  Did you know you could get medical advice in the self checkout line in the grocery store? It is amazing where people seek advise and from whom they seek it.  With today's lack of trust in the medical industry, I cannot blame them.  I hope to provide some truthful health information in my podcasts.  Thank you for taking a listen. What was the fork in the road for your change in health trajectory?  My family history lead me to medicine, but it was a podcast on running that inspired me to change my practice.   My first marathon was to raise money for the American Diabetes Association to "find a cure".  It was changing my practice that lead to my practice success in treating diabetes.  Running has been a positive influence on my physical and mental health.  They say when you finish a marathon or an Ironman triathlon that you are changed.  It is true, but the 100 mile ultramarathon took all of that up a notch.  I will share a few stories about people in my practice that have

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 505: Choosing Wisely

    30/01/2025 Duración: 33min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  Do you want to live to 100 or perhaps longer than relatives? Is health span more important than longevity.  How about living well until you die? These are common statements that I hear in my practice.  But rarely do people have a detailed plan to achieve their goals.  I believe most people want to live as long as they can.   While many subscribe to supplements, life hacks and procedures, the most important thing you can do to achieve longevity is nutrition, exercise and sleep.  Everyday matters and the rate of decline can actually be measured through changes in our DNA.   What more details? Check out the podcast.   Thanks for listening.  Website: https://doctordulaney.com/membership/join-us/ Consultations: jami@doctordulaney.com Dietitian consult: addie@doctordulaney.com Strength training: nathan@doctordulaney.com Water distillers: https://mypurewater.com/?sld=jdulaney Cookbook: https://a.co/d/6zVUluq Ebook: https://doctordulaney.com/powerful-plates-ebook/

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 504: You Don't Always Get What You Want But You May Get What You Need

    23/01/2025 Duración: 38min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  I ran 33 miles out of 100 miles at the Long Haul 100 this past weekend and I am happy.  Last year it would have been a major disappointment not finishing.  This year I am grateful to have ran well and came away stronger than ever.  I will share the nitty gritty details of the weekend in this episode.   There were plant based vegan people running but the majority were not including the aid stations.  That is my problem and not theirs.  So we happily bring our own food and supplies for great tent living for 48 hours.  We had 3 coolers and a jet burner to warm up food.  Most of the food was made at home such as pasta salad, tu-no salad, mushroom burgers, seitan-tofu loaf, potato soup, and tomato soup.  We had a fruit bowl and fruit juice as well as simple running foods of sunbutter and jelly and various bars.  Being plant based did not decrease our fun or enjoyment hanging out with non plant based people at a state park.   Living your best plant based life does not have to

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 503: For Your Eyes Only

    10/01/2025 Duración: 33min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   When we think of eye health, the first food that comes to mind is carrots.  We all need Vitamin A and carrots are a great source.  Eggs are also rich in Vitamin A but they are also rich in cholesterol that will not do your eyes any favors.   Did you know your eyes are rich in mitochondria?  Being overweight is a risk for cataracts.   I had a great visit with my plant based eye doctor and will share some discussions we had.  Anywhere there is blood supply there is a risk of vascular disease.  Aerobic exercise is a great way to improve the stiffness of arteries.  How much?  Give a listen.   If you would like to get the year started with good plant based nutrition and exercise, give our website a look at https://doctordulaney.com/membership/join-us/ Thank you for listening.  Consultations: jami@doctordulaney.com Dietitian Consultations: addie@doctordulaney.com Strength training plans: nathan@doctordulaney.com Water distillers: https://mypurewater.com/?sld=jdulaney   Code c

  • Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 502: Comebacks

    28/12/2024 Duración: 27min

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   This has been a year of comebacks and new traditions.  The holidays  can be very stressful partially due to maintaining traditions.  Some of the traditions are not even healthy or even take away from more healthy behaviors.  Taken together with the stress of fulfilling the tasks makes for a not so joyous holiday.  As the minimalists say, does this still bring you joy? Large sedentary family and friend gatherings with excessive amounts of calorically dense foods can derail a nutrition and movement comeback.  We added a new Christmas Eve fun run to our holiday tradition.  Less time in the kitchen and more time moving.   I have been on a comeback journey with an ankle injury.  Who knew an ankle injury could take so long to heal? I have had to focus on what is going right more than what I am unable to accomplish running.  Step by step changing negative dialog to positive dialog.  It is not easy but is much better when I can do it.   Comeback stories are the best, and I woul

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   Today, Andy "Croom" Mathews joins me to talk about his 200 mile ultra run across Florida for his 63 third year of life.  We talk about his running career and how different it turned out from what he thought it would.  Better yet, we talked or he did, about the multiple ultras he has planned for the near future.  To say that we can do more than we think we can could not be more evident than listening to his story. What will be your story for 2025?  The sky is the limit if you are willing to roll up your sleeves and do a few hard things.  If you have met Andy, you will know he does just that with a big old smile on his face.   Enjoy the episode and Thank you for listening.  Website to join our wellness practice: https://doctordulaney.com/membership/join-us/ Registered Dietician consults: addie@doctordulaney.com Practice questions or consultations: jami@doctordulaney.com Strength training: nathan@doctordulaney.com Water distillers: https://mypurewater.com/?sld=jdulaney.
