  • Crucified, Dead and Buried

    07/09/2014 Duración: 49min

Luke's account of Jesus' crucifixion, death and burial in 23:26-56 is unique. It's like... well, let me compare it to the story of Batman. At the first appearance of the Dark Knight, there are a whole lot of talk, reports and arguments - much of it indirect to the main character. They argue, "is he real?" "Is he good?" and "Can he save the Gotham?" These arguments are of course presented by all sorts of minor characters in the story, some taking the stance against the hero and some for the hero. Some are aggressive and active on their stance (villains, etc), some are just passive (citizens). When the climax of the story is played out and the truth is revealed (vaguely in case of this hero), some shift sides and some remain stubborn.

  • Guilty as Charged

    24/08/2014 Duración: 35min

Has truth ever gotten you in trouble? They're odd things to pair, no? Truth sets you free. Truth gives you light. Truth... oh, you know, all the good stuff. Truth hardly causes harm, trouble or suffering. But when it does, that's a sign that you're in a company of enemies.

  • A Peter or A Judas?

    10/08/2014 Duración: 52min

I've never been to a class reunion nor do I ever plan to. I think it's a fascinating event though - seeing who's become who. You know the classic ones - who'd have known that nerd guy would have become a multi millionaire? What happened to that jock, the most popular guy and the captain of the cheerleading squad? It's not all that shocking though when you really reflect on them. There's always a trace of greatness or failure.

  • A Man of Sorrows

    03/08/2014 Duración: 30min

Previous passage we studied left us questioning, as we witnessed disciples' readiness to events of Passion, if Jesus might be ready for what's to come. In His last few days, and especially during the Passion, we see Jesus utterly, absolutely alone. Will loneliness be the biggest challenge of them all? What about the ridicule, the torture, the shame, and betrayal?

  • Ready Or Not

    27/07/2014 Duración: 34min

Have you ever been in a conversation which no one understood you? Well, that wouldn't be a much of conversation, would it? How about trying to teach someone who just didn't get it? And it's gotten so bad you just had to say, "Ah, you know, that's enough." How about trying to lead a group (say, a church perhaps) to a new direction with a vision but just seems no one gets it?

  • Tell your Story

    06/07/2014 Duración: 40min

Have you ever told your story (about you, your life, something that happened to you) to someone and you couldn't keep Gos out of it? To you, without mentioning Jesus, your story made no sense. Maybe you've heard someone share a story and while the person didn't mention God, you couldn't stop thinking how God is the missing piece of the story? And you're just itchin' to tell the person!

  • The World or Jesus

    29/06/2014 Duración: 40min

Call it a double life, or compartmentalized, we all do it, or done it. We live and think indifferent than the worldly at one moment. We seek and worship God in the next. We operate based on the economy of the world. Yet we pray God would somehow thwart it. So which is it?

  • The Scandal of Grace

    22/06/2014 Duración: 31min

San Francisco has one of the most protective systems for renters versus landlords. It serves well for many. And of course, some abuse it. It brings out the worst of people I think. Some of you may know, as well as I do, some people who's gotten a good chunk of cash to move out of a rented unit. The system, I think, almost gives renters an illusion that they are the owner (you may know someone who fixes up a rented home with such illusion).

  • The Tears of God

    15/06/2014 Duración: 43min

Have you ever had a day that had you emotionally on a roller coaster? You laughed, you cried, you got angry, you got sad - all in one day! I'm talking 24, Jack Bauer kind of crazy day!

  • The Exchange

    11/05/2014 Duración: 37min

Have you ever done something that caused the dislike or ridicule from someone, or a group of people? It may have been a mistake like burning the popcorn, letting people down by being late, or nothing at all; you're just being picked at. Or something serious: you really screwed up. In any way, you have become the focus of attack and animosity. But, then comes a person who takes the hostile attention from you and takes it unto him/herself. Now you're forgotten and everybody turns against him/her instead. The hostility that was yours is exchanged with the compassion offered.

  • Invested Life

    05/05/2014 Duración: 36min

When it comes to investing, I'm a wimp. I don't, and won't, gamble my money with the stocks. If, and that's a big 'if', I had an investment portfolio, it'd be 80-20 type, hardly risky, hardly rewarding. In fact, I'm lazy when it comes to investment. I don't even know what '80-20' means. I just made that up. I think I heard of it from somewhere, maybe a class in college. Most I've done is putting my money away in CD (Certificates of Deposit, not music CD, duh!), yielding like $500 for $10,000. Investing is risky. And it takes work to understand the market, risk, options, etc. Even in the Wall Street, there is no get-rich-quick despite how many movies you've seen or stories you've heard. And you should never fall for "low risk, high return' investment type scams. It doesn't exist. Successful investment takes risk and a lot of work.

  • Blind Faith

    04/05/2014 Duración: 38min

My eight year old daughter asked me a few days ago, "how can I believe in Jesus when I can't see Him?" Kids do ask tough questions, not so much of question itself but the lack of presupposition and premise makes their questions challenging to engage. So how do you think I answered it? How would you answer it?

  • Open Wide (your mouth)

    27/04/2014 Duración: 38min

I once asked this question to a group of college students (some of you might have been there); what do you miss most about your childhood? Some of the responses were rather obvious: no homework, no worries, etc. Some were deep: the innocence, fear-free, etc. My own answer was depressing - myself and others who heard it; laughters. Let us ponder on that question again this week; what do you miss the most about your childhood? What is it about the childhood, as terrible as it might have been to some, that we are so fond of?

  • Beat your Chest

    20/04/2014 Duración: 35min

It's the Passion week. Today is the Good Friday. On Sunday, we'll celebrate the Easter. But wait. Do you really? Do you really celebrate it? You know the whole 'rugged cross,' 'the stones rolled away,' etc. If you do, when have you start celebrating it? Can you remember the time, the place, the mood, ambiance, the smell, the touch; the whole scene? Sounds romantic, huh? And it should be. Passion of Christ is God's romance. Do you remember it like you remember your first kiss? The nervousness, the... I better stop. The point is this; if you celebrate the Easter, you must know when and how it all began for you. For example, this guy, a terrible, terrible person that he is, must remember it was when he beat his chest as he prayed "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!" for it was then he was justified. Jesus said so in Luke 18:13. Come and celebrate the Easter this Sunday. Let us remember, as that is the whole point, the time when we beat our chests and were justified. See you on Sunday at 1045am, and greet e

  • When Nagging is Okay

    13/04/2014 Duración: 36min

Have you ever had someone drive you crazy by nagging? A good example would be kids. I had a first hand experience at this recently; how about a bunch of 7 year old girls in the soccer team nagging non-stop while I try to get them to play scrimmage? "I wanna be a goalkeeper!" "I wanna kick the ball!" "Can I be on a different team!" This happened yesterday and I can still hear their little, screeching voices in my head! In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus tells a story of a woman who nagged her way to get the judge to vindicate her. She was too much for him to bear that he shouted "whatever takes to get you to stop coming to me!" You're right. Maybe nagging is not the best word for it. Persistent maybe? How about desperate?

  • The Kingdom in Your Grasp

    06/04/2014 Duración: 34min

"I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. There will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken and the other left. * Luke 17:34-35 Some Christians: "That's the Rapture! When will it happen? What are the signs? How can I find more about this? This is an exciting stuff! Oh, those poor people, they're gonna be left behind!" Hollywood: "This makes a great movie! Everyone gets up on this apocalyptic stuff!" Tim: "Jerry! This'll make a great novel. Let's title it Left Behind. It's so... biblical!" Pharisees: "So, Jesus, when is the Kingdom of God coming? We like to know so we can be ready when it happens!" How would you respond? What did Jesus mean in Luke 17:20-34 when He talks about vultures, lightening, Noah, Sodom, etc? Come and learn together this Sunday at 1045am!

  • An Appreciate Love

    31/03/2014 Duración: 42min

Many people throughout the centuries have studied the words of the Bible and come to similar conclusions: In this Yahweh, we see an all-powerful, all-knowing, jealous, righteous, faithful, loving, kind, Holy God! Even the most hardened atheist says of the historical Jesus: “The simple record of these three short years of active life has done more to regenerate and soften mankind than all disquisitions of philosophers and all the exhortations of moralist.” The gospel writer, Luke, presents us with an account of 10 lepers; all of whom know God to be compassionate. Thus they come to Jesus for healing, but only one of these turn back to thank Jesus for the restoration of his broken condition. In the encounter of His Presence, we are all called to make a decision of just who this Jesus is. Come see the example of someone who makes the right choice as we listen to Luke 17:11-19.

  • The Secret to Forgiving

    16/03/2014 Duración: 37min

It's typical, right? Jesus telling disciples that we must forgive not once, not twice but seven times (17:4). But it's never that simple. What's the secret? See where Jesus is going with this; Lost >> Found >> Graced >> Grateful >> ? Found >> Graced >> Grateful >> X

  • The Lazarus Test

    09/03/2014 Duración: 48min

Do you know where your faith stand? Are you certain that when you die, you'll be by the Lord's side, or in hell? If so, how do you know? How does anybody know? Do you wish for some kind of standardized test to measure your faith; whether you're a heaven-boudn or hell-bound? In Jesus' time, there seemed to have been such a standardized test - let's call it the Pharisee Test. If you hoped to pass this test, you'd had to be rich, ultra religious, devoted to law, intelligent, and well connected. You'll also need to have spare time to play spy on certain religiously questionable people (like Jesus) and "Judge Dredd" on common people on the street.

  • Prepared Failure (a.k.a. Breaking Bad)

    02/03/2014 Duración: 43min

Have you ever come to a time when you realize you have failed, things are gone bad, and you are at the end of the rope? It's devastating. It's terrible. It's heart-breaking. But you can't just sit and mourn. You've got to prepare for what comes after the failure. In Luke 16:1-13, Jesus continues His teaching which started in chapter 15. The parable Jesus presents here is the most confusing one of all. It's about a steward who's caught and about to get fired. But he's smart. So he prepares for what's to come (unemployment) and he does it so shrewdly, the master praises his cunningness while losing more money and being played by his former employee. This is a notoriously difficult parable to understand. But lucky for us, we have Hollywood to help us understand Jesus' parable - that's if you've ever watched Breaking Bad. If you haven't, do not despair. Come and join us this Sunday to find out.
